Is Favre and all the problems he comes with really worth $13 million dollars? And we'd also have to break the bank for Ray Lewis.. I'd much rather have Bart Scott or Karlos Dansby. Not that either of them wouldn't be costly though...
That is literally one of the worst articles I have ever read and I truly mean that. The Jets need Lewis and Favre??? That's just.. well I can't even put it into words. Anyway.. 1.) Trade Coles for "ripping" Favre?? Aside from the fact that Favre shouldn't even be here next season and what Coles said was completely true, Coles is a decent player and we won't get anything for trading him. Yeah, no thanks. 2.) Barton does nothing? He's easily the most pumped up guy on our defense and a hell of a pass rusher. Our defensive calls and secondary last year blew chunks so he was in coverage on every play. Letting him walk would be a mistake. 3.) Release Ellis for throwing snow and a minor traffic violation?? Really? He's not exactly an all star, but come on. 4.) Nugent's reliability hasn't really that much of an issue. It just get's blown out of proportion since he was our first pick of the draft. I wouldn't really feel any better off with Feely 5.) Listen folks, Take it from a forty plus year fan of this team, we need to forever be getting younger and stop being the last stop before the home for these players. I have seen too many times the Jets bring in guys who are just past there prime. They come in at a very high price with great promise only to deliver in most cases bitter disappointment . Yes there have been exceptions to that above rule, but they are few and far in between. I think if one made a list of all the older F/A's who were just released outright or sign with the Jets because we were willing to offer more money then the clubs they played with for six years or more. You would begin to see this type of signing is such a waste of a roster space and the chance for a younger draftee to make the squad and more importantly to make an impact on the team for a much longer term. Case in Point, Brett Farve, 26 million dollars over two years for a wonderful fading talent. Only a four game improvment over the previous year, one less year for our younger player to develop and the team comes full circle next year faced with the same questions and hole in the roster to be filled by who? Develop your younger draft picks if they suck after there intial contract you cut them and move on. They must however be allowed to get the time they need both in practice and in the game to know for sure. If you are to sign F/A then you must ask yourself this question. Will I get at the least three solid years of play at an above average level and will I get the return on the investment of the F/A contract? If you cannot answer those question with a resounding Yes, Yes, Yes, then you need to save your money for a better F/A or sign a few more undrafted guys with the same cash and hope for aa jewel in the rough.........
If we cut him it wouldn't save any money, but if we traded him, the other team have to pay the guaranteed money, right? Which is why no team would trade for him..
I cant believe you guys are so against this..in my opinion, to say Ray Lewis would be unwelcome or that youd rather have other players than him is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. The reason Bart Scott is as good as he is, is because he plays next to Ray Lewis. Ray holds people accountable, is one of the hardest hitters in the NFL, and brings an intensity and football intelligence that NO ONE else in the NFL brings. Having a guy like Ray on this team would develop an identity for the Jets, a thing we haven't had in years. We've always been in the middle of the pack for offense and defense, and please don't throw our defensive stats at me for 2004 for our offensive point total for this year because the fact remains that NO team fears our offense or defense. I think that balance is important, but this team needs an identity. When you are playing Baltimore, Pittsburgh, the Pats, etc, you know the defense is coming. The Jets defense never gets any respect, nor do they deserve it. With Ray here, that would change. Mark my words if we actually do the right thing and land him. I guarantee that Gholston, Harris, Rhodes, Revis, Jenkins, Ellis, etc will all play at an extremely higher level.
^Signing Ray would bring an improvement, not doubt, and I wouldn't be against it. I think it would cost a lot and it would be a step in the wrong direction, however, but that's not the issue here. The issue is that that article is crap and the 'contributor' is completely out of his element.
We have very little control over any of these players right now. Favre may decide to retire, and Lewis may decide to stay with the Ravens. Why don't we wait until the ball's on our court before we start more of these types of threads.
didnt read the article but ,regarding ur quote of the articele any suggesting of cutting eric barton or that he hasnt been a contributor to our defense is retarded. "roughing the passer" penalties aside, over half of them were bogus. and he needs to be kept even if its a backup, our backups are horrible. bowens is a situational pass rusher (pretty solid at it) thats about it, and that spencer guy blows the big dong.
Again, Bring in someone else's aging stars is a waste of cap space and roster space. The key word is aging, if you can pick up a younger player like a Pace, then you have to consider it. Also the posistion where the player is going to be plugged in at. No doubt in most cases lineman have a longer NFL shelf life then say RB"s , yet if they are very short term then it's better to develop you own younger players and save the cap and roster space... As far as leadership goes, if you need to import leadership from the players side then you are not drafting the right players and the coaching staff is not doing there jobs....
Yeah that's the way to do it ! Lets just sign every free agent that is over 30 and on the downhillside of their careers. That is how we will bring a SB back to the Jets. I can't believe somebody else didn't think of this 40 years ago.
