Jets center Mangold eager to run ball with Rex

Nick Mangold's ears perked up immediately. The Jets center took notice of Rex Ryan's "We're going to the White House" opening statement Jan. 21, but there was another Ryan line that Mangold latched onto.

Which was: "The message to the rest of the league is, 'Hey, the Jets are coming, and we're going to give you everything we've got, and that's going to be, I think, more than you can handle."

    Mangold smiled.

"To me, when someone says something like that, I instantly go to the run game," he said yesterday at the Tampa Convention Center. "And as an offensive lineman, I love running the ball, and luckily with T.J. [ Thomas Jones] and Leon [Washington], those are fantastic. When he says the Jets are coming, I figure the Jets are running it. That's what I immediately thought of when I heard that."

Mangold wasn't at the Jets' facility when Ryan was introduced, but he watched on line from home in Centerville, Ohio. Mangold was in Tampa to publicize next week's Pro Bowl, in which he will play for the first time.

Mangold went back to Ohio shortly after his season ended, but he has kept up with most of the Jets' offseason news, including some made by an anonymous Jet who said Brett Favre had been a "distant" presence in the locker room.

Mangold took issue with the perception that Favre caused any dissension.

"We had a good joking and playful banter, but at the same time, he's 39 and I'm 24 , and I'm not expecting him to come over and get a game of Halo in right after practice," Mangold said, referencing the video-game series.

"So I knew that there's a difference there. This isn't a guy I came in with like Brick , where we were in the Senior Bowl, the Combine and get drafted together by the same team. I expect different things from Brick than I would with Brett coming in. It's age, experience and all those things, not ."

As for the charge the anonymous player made about Favre not going to dinner with teammates, Mangold didn't have a problem with that, either. "The reality is he was just going home to be with his kids," he said. "There's a huge difference with that ."

Now that the Jets have chosen a coach, the million-dollar ($13 million, to be exact) question is whether Favre returns. Mangold said he hasn't talked to him since the season ended.

"I asked him when we were heading out and he said, 'I have to think about it and take some time,' " Mangold said. "That's all I know, and I haven't talked to him about it, but really, I know he's going to make the best decision for himself and for the team."

Mangold said he was excited and "intrigued" about Ryan after seeing his aplomb at his introductory news conference.

But at the same time, Mangold said the sting of how the Jets' season ended - going 1-4 after an 8-3 start - still stung.

"It was a shame that we did crash like that, and it's one of those things you go into the offseason regretting," Mangold said. "To be done with the season on New Year's and not in the postseason was a huge disappointment from where we were."

Notes & quotes: The Jets made official four additions - reported previously - to the staff. They announced the hiring of assistant coaches Henry Ellard (wide receivers); Anthony Lynn (running backs); Doug Plank (assistant secondary) and Dennis Thurman (secondary). The team also announced that Bob Sutton, its defensive coordinator since 2006, would remain as senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach.

this seems like a confirmation of Favre's distance from the team, even though Mangold seems cool with it. There's no doubt that he wasn't "one of the guys".

No, thats not what the article means.
By distance it means , not wanting to be 'part of' the locker room banter , which I can appreciate.
Like mangold said , he and Brick are close for a number of reasons , Halo ?
Brett is a married older guy with children , I would do what hes done as well. Nothing to do with being distant from the team.

they wont buy it, they heard about what peter king said, and u know how often he is correct. favre should have called his wife and said "honey, me and the guys are going to play halo. Put the kids to bed yourself because if i do not play video games with the guys people will say i'm selfish and being distant. btw, don't wait up.".

It's good to hear a rational voice on the whole "distant" thing. My main collaborator at my job has almost the same age gap with me as Favre with Mangold, we are a very productive, comfortable team at work but no, I don't go over to his house and play Gears of War 2 after work like a couple other guys sometimes do. I don't get evaluated at my job about how much we "hang outside of it, and neither of us get all hurt that we're not texting each other "BFF" when we leave for the day.

It's funny how some people mock Mangini for his emphasis on character in players, saying that all that matter is talent, etc (and talk about getting in Lewis, TO, Chad Johnson etc), yet at the same time some contradict themselves about posting how terrible it is that Favre didn't hang out after practice with guys almost yond enough to be his kids.

Mangold is from "Centerville, Ohio"? That explains it.

I hear what you are saying but at this point the Jets need "one of the guys" leading them. They need inspiration as well as being "very productive". They need a guy that is willing to be there all the way, through the entire offseason and all of it's components. Also, if Brett took care of the ball like Warner does I'd say maybe it would be ok for him to come back even with his diminishing skills. Favre is just not ideal for this team right now. He should call it a career and go do the things he should be doing at this time in his life. Or go play for Minny where he really wants to be (that might inspire him a bit more) and maybe there he'll be one of the guys. Either way he leaves us alone to find our QB of the future. This is what we need badly right now. To focus on the future. Please retire Favre!!!! Do it now while you can still go out with dignity!

That's funny. How much must your life suck to accept a public demotion and not put up a fight? Sutton is demoted and doesn't even talk to another team? What a stroke.

yes, his life sucks because he probably realizes he wouldn't get another D Coordinator shot or simply enjoys working and living in NY and would like to stay with the team.

I'm sure a life where your only connection to the NFL is discussing it on a message board is a much better life.

If that's true then yes he should be gone, whether he wants to be or not. The only thing is, I think you'd have a real hard time making a realistic case that the Jets would do better next year with the current alternative options. In other words, you need to back up your assertion in that last sentence I quoted. And go furhter than just proving he is not "ideal" Nobody is "ideal."

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!

You're joking, right? I actually LOL'd. Not just typed, performed. Warner is notorious for not taking care of the ball by holding it too low, all defensive players have to do to knock it loose is smack his elbow. He NEVER holds the ball high like he's supposed to.
