Now, why is the file that my virus software keeps picking up not on here? I'm pretty sure thats the reason my comp. has been all messed up lately.

Hijackthis picks up rogue .dll's and .exe's. Usually, you have to download a trojan so if you knew the name of the program where you got the trojan from, you probably could find that app in the hijackthis logfile... Did you try to delete the file manually or with McAfee in safe mode?

Anytime MP. Just remember to do regular maintenance (CCCleaner) and backups of your computer so that if and when this happens again, you can either do battle with the bug or install a clean image that's only a week or so old.

Don't forget to use google as a resource as well. You'd be surprised at the information that's out there on viruses and just about anything computer related.

Finally, Filehippo.com is the best place for free apps that work very well. You'll probably find apps there that you're already using. Their servers are usually pretty fast too so a d/l doesn't take all night..

    Cheers!!

This is a great thread and its realy helpful for thoses that are not the most computer or software savy. :metal:

I personnally never pay for any protection software and never seem have ad-ware/virus problems.

Here is the list of four free programs I use in sequense. (CNet rating 1-5 stars)

    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2 (CNet rating 3/User rating 4)
    http://spybot.search-destroy2009.com/1/index.asp?

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.33 (CNet rating 4.5/User rating 4.5)
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

Windows? Defender (CNet User rating 3)
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.233 (CNet rating 5/User rating 4)
    http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
    http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?tag=mncol

Programs I have used in the past:

Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 (CNet rating 5/User rating 4)
    http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html?tag=mncol;psum

Auslogics Disk Defrag (CNet rating 5/User rating 4)
    http://www.download.com/Auslogics-Disk-Defrag/3640-2086_4-10628872.html

Extra note for those that have problems watching mov or avi files. If you don't get a picture/voice together or the lypse are out of sync you need to get the newest version of one of these.

    XP Codec Pack 2.4.6
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm

    Vista Codec Package 5.1.0
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Vista_Codec_Package.htm

I don't use K-lite Codec Pack anymore based on personnal preferrence, but it is an okay codec pack with lots of add-ons.

Hey, thanks a lot for sending that PM but what you said worked as I said in my response.

However, I have a problem which is very vague so you may have no idea what I am talking about.

Whenever I watch streaming videos online (fox.com, nbc.com etc.) or listen to itunes, or even sometimes listen to dvds, my sound is extremely distorted and the video is very choppy (for the online shows/dvds). I have talked to the people at Dell and they have no idea what to do. I have a fairly new laptop, an Inspiron e1505, and I'm not sure if my speakers are blown or something. However, the volume of the audio doesn't make a difference to the level of distortion. Sometimes, after like 10-15 minutes the distortion will go away and I will be able to watch/listen to things with much clearer sound/picture. I know this is very vague but if you have any advice I would appreciate it.

OK, so we had a notebook disaster. This seemed like a good place to ask for guidance.

Now I can pretty much fix anything desktop PC related, but the only support I've ever been able to give my wife with her laptop is strictly software related.

She dropped it on our concrete garage floor. Ouch. Some physical plastic damage, which is no big deal, but her LCD screen now looks like modern art. Quite beautiful actually, but totally unusable. I can still get her touchpad and a USB remote mouse to move the cursor (I can see it if I get it to the upper-left corner), so I assume her hard drive, processor, ram, etc. are still functional.

My question is can you get a display fixed on a notebook? Would it be cheaper to just get her a docking station and a cheap flatscreen monitor? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as she's having a meltdown over this.

Anybody have any idea why a Gateway laptop (about 2 years old now) would suddenly have the USB ports stop working? There are 3 USB ports and a SD card reader on the left side of the laptop. All those things stopped reading anything. However, they still power devices (if I plug in a mouse, it lights up, but it won't control the movement, and it won't read a USB memory stick).

I've tried shutting her down, and removing the battery for 10 minutes. Nothing seems to help.

Device manager shows no problem with USB controllers.

Can you reload your Mobo drivers? Update the BIOS?? Delete and reload the USB ports in device manager?

Try reloading or updating your motherboard drivers first. If that doesn't work, try updating your BIOS. If that doesn't work, as a last resort, reload your OS and all SP's.

There is a very simple thing that can be done to prevent almost all of these problems in the first place. Create a guest account with not privilege to install anything. This way they can download all the spyware, viruses, malware and whatever else they want but they won't be installed. You can do everything else like surf the internet, online shopping, play mp3s, watch videos without having to worry about catching a new virus.

The only problem is that you may not have access to some programs. I have siteadvisor installed in my administrator account but it doesn't work in the guest account and I cannot install it either. Site advisor tells you if a web site is safe according to McAfee.

You would only need to use your administrative account when you need to download and install something.

Hey, try installing the K-Lite codec pack:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
This is just the basic pack but maybe it can help fix the issue your having, Also try uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver.
