I don't blame Jones for the collapse, this is a thread about Jones. I woudn't unload him without another option. I don't think he is a quality feature back and I think he's old. With Ryan as the HC I think we need a blocking TE who can actually seal the edge, a right Tackle who can actually get low enough in his stance to run block and a feature back. Without that I see Jones as part of running back by committee. I would much prefer to see Leon teamed with a pile mover rather than Jones. NE running game was more productive than ours down the stretch in December without Maroney who is far more dynamic than Jones. Much more 1st downs, more yards and more YPC. You can't leave out Faulk. I would take Faulk and a body over Jones. Faulk outright kills teams out of the backfield. Welcome back TB! Always enjoy your insight.
i don't love or hate the guy, i'm just defending a player who played his ass off and had a career year for us. like i said 4.9 per carry during the 5 game melt down, him, leon and revis seemed to be the only guys who didnt wear down or not give 100% during that stretch. you act like 3.9 is a crap ypc total, is it great? no, but 3 downs for 3.9 ypc=1st down, im good with that.
i agree with you, he is old, but right now there is no need to get rid of him, we have more pressing needs for 09, ilb,ss,qb,wr are more pressing needs then the hb position.
3.9 YPC can be outstanding depending on the circumstances and how your O is run. You can drive the field and take 9 minutes off the clock averaging 3.9 YPC as well as pound a D into giving up. If your a team that's outright committed to the run and your getting the first downs on third and shorts low YPC may well be the sign of a very effective running game especially for a feature back that's the defensive focus. Riggins when he was driving the Redskins SB teams didn't run for big YPC. It's an over rated stat. If your a decoy running out of the spread with an excellent OL I expect high YPC, the O is setting up the D for big runs. In the NFL running backs get paid to move the chains in December. Jones had some great games for us no doubt he surprised me I just think we need to draft a big back at some point to take over and I think that teamed up with Leon could be dynamic. Jones isn't going anywhere but I see his role diminishing and faster than most people think.
perhaps but i think jones has at the very least 1 good year left in him, considering our cap situation i think the rb position can wait to be addressed until 2010, we have more pressing needs this season. and fyi i wasnt trying to jump on you at all, as i usually agree with most of what you post. i'm just tired of everyone pointing fingers at players on this team because we played poorly down the stretch, especially when it's not warranted.
The RB position must be addressed this year if Ryan really wants to be a run first offense. Jones averaged 19 carries a game. Not nearly enough and no matter what you may think Washington will never get more then 7 or 8. That is 27. A third back is needed and must be taken early or forget a run offense this year.
alright, well i'll get ahold of jones in a minute and tell him he needs to call more running plays for himself. you serious don? jones wasnt calling the plays and he wasnt asking the cs to not give him the ball. we have more pressing needs this year and with our cap situation we can not address all of them, jones is good for 1 more year at least. but just for shits and giggles who do you think we should pick up to address the rb position this year? and what do we do with jones?
Yeah, I'm serious. Are you in thinking Jones can handle 25-30 carries a game? He would last about 3 weeks. I am not advocating doing anything with Jones. I said all along we need to add another back, not replace what we have.
yeah i think he can. does he look like he isn't a well conditioned player to you? all season the more carries he had the better he played, that is fact. but you still failed to answer my last question?
He is neither big enough or strong enough to handle that kind of abuse. He has never averaged 20 carries a game in his career and now he will be over 30 years old to boot. Hell, even Peterson has help and Turner has help. Jones is no Peterson or Turner. I would like to see us pick up Ward who is good for 15 quality carries a game.
in the 5 games jones rushed over 21 times he had 609 yrd 5tds at 4.8 ypc. he can handle it. now, who will be replacing jones in 09 since u think the rb issue needs to be addressed this year?
sorry, the last part of your post wasnt there when i was replying, the giants are not letting him go, forget it.
I really don't know where you get these ideas, Don. I agree a power back would help our running game immensely, but Jones can easily take 20 carries a game and Lion can definitely take more than 7 or 8. TJ is listed at 215 and lifts with the linemen.. he's pretty big and probably pretty strong. TJ has been very durable in the past 5 years and has carried for 25+ yards on many occasion.. and yes, he has averaged more than 20 carries a game, in 2005. A player like Ward would be great, but he has never consistently taken more than 15 carries a game so don't rag on TJ for durability. It is kind of sad though.. thinking about how Ward was originally drafted by the Jets.
He is not going to be asked to run more than 20 times a game no matter what any of you may think. It won't happen. Turner averaged 23 and Peterson 21 and you think Jones is more durable than either of those 2 guys who are in their prime? Come on. It has never happened in his career and it won't start now. If Ryan really wants a running offense and expects to run the ball 30-35 times a game then they will add another back. Guaranteed. If they don't Jones won't last half the season.
They need to add another back regardless. If Jones were to get that many carries, not having a backup would be downright foolish.
You're probably right but they have other FAs they need to sign too and I hope we at least try. We need a big bruising back when the opponents will be stacking the box against the run.
Thomas Jones is a very average runningback. Honestly when ever I see him have a 10 yard run, I think a guy with a decent burst would have gone for 20. And when he get's 1 yard after going into the pile, a "smallback" like Washington goes into the same pile and falls for 3 yards. One of those backs that go good when things are going good, and to me that is the worst kind of back to have. The very opposite of what the running game should be for any good team.
I guess your right TJ sucks (afc rushing title) and the Oline does everything for him ( last year had a 1000 yards with clark & clement blocking) and he is to old( well in 2006 with an average Oline he took them to the superbowl besides the bear real good D) SO mr smarty" i watch everything" obviously u dont .............we need to give leon 10 touches thats it
