Anyone got some insight as to what we can expect to happen with the 3-4 or with our aggressiveness in play-calling? Will Ryan try to go 4-3 or throw in some of those weird defensive formations we see on the Ravens like LBs in a 3pt stance with 2 d-linemen, etc.? Will be do away with the 3 man rushes and blitz guys more? Will Kerry Rhodes' words be tested, in other words, will he have a shot to try and be like Ed Reed? I am glad Sutton is gone and I feel pretty good about the future of the defense. I am wondering if Rex will try to have any input on offense, because sometimes Brian's calls were predictable and poorly designed (ie. deep passes with safety help and only 1 WR going deep)
We did not have aggressive calling last year. This year your about to find out what aggressive defense is. Ryan's 34 base is different. He will mix in a four man front. He'll blitz 4 guys. He'll drop a DL inot coverage. Yes. 350+ pound Ngata dropped back into a short zone on some plays last year. He attempts to keep the O-lineman off balance and guessing who thier assignment is on any given play. Rhodes will not be tested so to say, but giving the chance to play. Our saftys played soft all year. They were deep to not give up the big play. This also prevented them from making thier own big plays often. This will change under Rex. We may give up more 40+ yard plays this year. We will also get after the QB with more consistancy and hopefully cause more turnovers. No more playing not to lose. This defense will play to win. As for Rex's influence on Brian, I hope its very little. One thing we lost last season was the shifting offense we had the year before. Favre did not like it as much and it was removed to speed up his acclimation with our offense. I think we will see a return to more of this in the comming season. I hope more of a power running game, but who knows. I hope hope is that the get Leon the friggen ball more.
We're gonna see a much more aggressive defense. I never saw the players attacking the ball under Mangini and Sutton. They played soft far too often. Ryan stated that if the defense makes mistakes, they'll make them going 100 mph I love hearing that. Be aggressive and god things will happen. A few bad, too, but that goes with it.
Exactly, Sutton was a horrible DC and Mangina just stood there chewing gum and never got in anyone's face. I remember watching the Titans/Ravens/Steelers in the playoffs and thinking, Wow those teams hit hard, wow those defenses are scary. They all play similar very aggressive hard-hitting styles and I hope/expect the Jets to be very similar in a year or two under Rex.
I never thought we had aggressive play-calling last season. iw as referring to whether or not people thought that aspect would change. I jsut hope these guys will get the most out of every player, that is realyl what it takes and tat's what the good teams do. On defense, Arizona didn't know how to do it early in the season. Now, they are performing at their best and look at them....
i cant wait for the new season to start and see our d hit people in the face. our new dc looks like he wants to hit people in the face.
not to be a party pooper or nothing, but I've sen the Ravens rush three or four on plenty of downs, even third and longs. So its not like its relentless pressure. Much like Mangini it's: disguise and mix up. I think the late shifting is an integral part to making the defense work because the quarterback is basically forced to say, ok WHAT?! on every snap and that gives the rush an extra split second. I notice a lot of balls being thrown to absolutely no one against the Ravens.
but they have the talent at DE to rush 3. We don't. Coleman is not a pass rusher. And Ellis is good, but he is now officially old. He's 32 in June. Its time to find his heir to the position as well. It will take 5 or 6 for that 1.7 second pocket that ESPN loves to show on the post game shows. But when 3 or 4 are rushed, it should be disguised well enough. No more Pace in coverage 85% of the time, its upsetting.
Gholston set this defense back a year. We could have been set at LB or CB if we didn't waste the pick on him. Now we still need both.
Thats right, one rookie fucked up 11 starters and set them back an entire season, even though they were 2nd in sacks in the AFC after week 12.... are you like this in real life?
That's right, he did. We could have had Mayo. We could have had Cromartie or McKelvin. Instead we still need a ILB and a CB. I know you just hate to accept the facts but they are what they are. We have absolutely nothing to show for the #6 pick in the draft.
oh the whole "what if" thing.... we should have drafted Tom Brady. we should have drafted Ed Reed. we should have drafted Cortland Finnegan in the 6th round too.
There is no comparison to the two. Not sure who we drafted instead of those people but they probably contributed to some degree. Gholston was freakin DEACTIVATED at one point and he was the #6 pick. How can anybody keep giving this bum the benefit of the doubt?
i'm not, but to say that it destroys the people above him on the depth chart doesn't make any sense. Besides, who on the CS has tons of 3-4 experience to coach the kid? No one. if he does nothing by 2010, then he's an embarrassment. But he has no bearing on the starters above him. They were doing fine until Mangini changed the scheme to something the players didn't like and messed everyone up.
Yeah, I can't say he really set us back. Firstly, they signed Pace to play OLB and still drafted Gholston already having two experienced starters in place (Pace and BT). And secondly, even though he regressed, part of that had to do with the coaching; that's irrelevant to what I'm responding to, but I thought it should be said. The point is, he wasn't drafted to start right away, because if the FO and Coaches were hellbent on getting a starter, they wouldn't have drafted a position in which 2 starters already existed.
I can't say Gholston set us abck either, because he's a rookie and PLENTY rookies suck before eventually becoming good, even great. IF he comes through then he really will be the key cog in our defense, not A key cog but THE. So for that reason alone he was worth the risk. Now, if he doesn't pan out, then he did set us back, but even then I do not regret the pick. It occurred to me during this latest spate of Gholstonia that Gholston is like Shawne Merriman, but natural. Possibly natural. Hell, he's a Jet, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He's just a natural freak. Calvin Johnson, Mario Williams, Antonio Gates. If he can find the heart, he's got the rest and THAT is why I don't regret the pick.
