How about the individual play of Chad Morton? Justin Miller?

When one guy a special teams coaches tutors succeeds, it might not be his doing. But virtual every return-man Westhoff has worked with has been well above average.

Yes, and of course not just for Favre. It's just a pain in the ass to have to learn all the new schemes that come with a new coach. Now, with regard to defense, we have to. Sutton was not good, and so there's no choice. But offense, why ruin something that basically works.

Schott doesn't have great stats, but he doesn't have bad stats either, and we Jet fans know about our history with awful OCs. I believe Schott will only get better. And anyway, he needs to, if he wants to be a head coach somewhere soon.

Yes, I agree completely. But if you look back on this thread the discussion was about 08.

Well, we also have the fact that Ryan will likely want to focus on revamping the D as his first priority. Not having had prior experience as an HC, also taking on the new experience of supervising an OC new to the team would be maybe another reason not to.

Then there's the issue of whether Mangini was overruling Schott. If the FO thinks there is merit to that charge, another reason not to hold it against Schott.

Absolutely. I think we've covered every reason possible to keep Schott on board. Now, it's up to him :)

As far as 08, I'd agree with you that punt coverage was decidedly average. I'd say it's also pretty fair to place a large amount of blame on the fact that our FO didn't bother to bring in an adequate punter. Hodges never seemed to be able to put much air under the ball, resulting in kicks that were average in distance and quite poor in hang time. Our coverage teams rarely had a chance to get into position to make the quick tackle.

As far as kick coverage, we were in the top 10 in average return. We didn't allow a single TD on either type of return. I'd say we were at least better than mediocre.

not entirely true, justin miller excelled under westhoff, Cotchery was great on punt returns, chad morton was awesome too. i think westhoff has plenty to do with their success

    Hey, nice avatar!

    Heh.

Anyway, the FO bringing people in also applied to Leon, who of course was the major star on ST's. That cuts both ways. Yes, I agree the Jets had a mediocre punter. Ranked 26th in the league.

For all Leon's contributions, combining punt returns and kickoff returns, the Jets were 14th.

The Jets were also 22nd in the league in FG's. I realize that stat is for total FG's. But looking at percentage kicks made I counted only 9 teams with a lower percentage. More or less the same.

I have not been able to find a stat for kickoffs. But if we average overall returns, FG's (both total and percentage) and punts, The Jets were @22nd. Less than average.

Why is everyone so high on this guy? Since he has been here the offense hasn't finished in the top ten. How does that make him a great coach? Let the little baby go coach some where else. Besides he gets way too cute with his play calling.

I didn't mean he should be HC. Just kind of a slap in his face that Callahan and Schitt get interviews but not him...

I'm sure Shotty is a bright young lad with loads of potential. I listened carefully to our new HC and I don't see Shotty and Ryan being on the same page.

It remains to be seen he actually stays here. I thought it was clever for Ryan to make it sound like it was Schott's decision at the same time he laid out a coaching philosophy which arguably is quite different from what Schott has shown in his time with the Jets.

Still, there is the Favre angle here. All indications are the FO and even Ryan want him back. IF they also think Schott's presence makes that any more likely, that could be a factor in play here, too.

Agree on the first paragraph. While the words were empathetic I got the distinct impression he would love it if Shott wanted to play elswhere. I didn't get the impression Ryan wanted Favre back, I thought he played that rather diplomatically. I get the impression Ryan thinks he could win with any QB who could hand the ball off and not screw it up.

Favre is the primary reason they want Schotty to stay, bet on it. He won't stay if he has to learn an entirely new offensive playbook and that's not what Woody wants. Brett Ratliff, as overrated as he is by the message board denizens, isn't going to sell PSLs to the ignorant buying public.

Don't be so down on Ratliff. He may turn out to be a legit qb. In pre-season, he corrected a lot of the inconsistency problems he had in the past. Next season, he may very well come ready to play.

Me neither. Just what the hell do owners and management see that the fans don't???

Probably the fact that they'll pay someone who is eons better more money(which is something they don't want to do). The NY -ETS(without the J 'cause they are cutting corners, it seems).
