http://www.prosportsdaily.com/comme...ered-his-chance-to-stay-with-jets-195504.html "Rex Ryan started filling out his coaching staff Wednesday, retaining Mike Westhoff as the special teams coordinator and hiring longtime Ravens associate Mike Pettine as his defensive coordinator. But the status of Brian Schottenheimer remained up in the air. Calling Schottenheimer "one of the top coordinators in football," Ryan all but said he wants to retain him. But nothing will be finalized until today or tomorrow, when he's expected to meet with him. Schottenheimer has drawn interest, but he's still under contract to the Jets and isn't allowed to speak to other teams. "I know the sting of not getting a job," said Ryan, who lost out to John Harbaugh last year with the Ravens even though he had been with the organization for nine years. "I felt a little betrayal there to be honest with you, but then when I got over myself, I realized it was going to be a great opportunity to learn under the guidance of John Harbaugh." Schottenheimer is leaning toward staying, sources said. If he wants to leave, it could get messy because of his contract. If Schottenheimer goes, Ryan could turn to Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese or Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson. Line coach Bill Callahan was retained.
It really doesn't matter to me if he stays or goes. If he's still pissed about not getting the HC job, then he either needs to get over it or move on. Its not like he's irreplaceable and I still wonder to this day about the rumors about Mangini handcuffing him are true or not. Running 3 times into the line when you have a healthy Farve is questionable at best. Going for it on 4th and 20 with a banged up Farve is just plain stupid. That being said, just because his last name is Schottenheimer doesn't make him untouchable or irreplaceable. Anybody that doesn't want to be on the 2009 New York Jets should just head for the exits now Players included.
Westhoff has been a part of 3 different regimes. That's how good he is... He should'be gotten an interview over Schittenheimer. I still don't get all the hype around Schitt. I hope he leaves.
If I had my way, Callahan would be the OC. If Shooty is going to be pissed off about not getting the HC position, then I'd rather he not be here. Callahan is an excellent OC with HC experience, and would be able to run the offensive side of things by himself without issue, and without the chip on his shoulder. If not Callahan, then I'd welcome Linehan.
The fact that Ryan went through the same last year should definitely help in retaining him. I haven't been a fan, but see value in keeping him here in terms of our young QB's development. I also think he can be a lot better with proper guidance. Hopefully we can keep him on board and Ryan can keep him in check. If he stays and continues his stupid ways, hopefully Ryan punches him in the mouth.
I am sure he has already been offered the job and has no answer. They wouldn't have retained Callahan before speaking with Schottenheimer. Personally, I wish he would just leave. Obviously he isn't interested in staying or he would have signed on already. He must be hoping for another gig to come along and is stringing this out as long as possible.
Agreed. When I look at the 2 names that have repeatedly surfaced as replacements, Zampese or Jackson, uh, I will stick with Shotty. And if he walks, I really hope they ask Callahan first.
Schotty, like Mangini, will be a great coach someday. I would like for him to stay with the team, because it provides some continuity. When you change the coach, you have to change the system. You have to learn new playbooks, etc. It's better for him to stay. It's also important to retain Favre, who has a problem learning new schemes. Anyway, I think it's important for Schott to remain OC.
I agree with that. Neither of those two are a fit on this team. Jackson never lasted more than a year anywhere as a OC and Zampese is coming from a team that does nothing but throw.
Whoever Rex sees fit should be OC, I don't want to resemble the Oakland Raiders and Crazy Al in any form. I think thats the reason i want Rex gone so badly, I feel like it isn't a pure decision on Ryan no mater what
I used to be a big Westhoff fan, but I thought ST's were pretty mediocre this past year. Plus I don't think his health is up to being HC. I'm okay with his staying, though. I just don't see how he was due a promotion.
Special teams were a strength. I don't see how they were mediocre at all. Leon routinely gave us great field position and our kickoff coverage was generally very good. The game that Brad Smith did not play was the one game in which we really struggled on coverage.
I don't give Westhoff credit for the individual play of Washington. Anybody here as ST coach would have had Washington out there. Take out Leon and ST's were mediocre.
Weren't we pretty bad on the other side of the ball on special teams? Seems the second half of the season everybody was getting long returns against us. Maybe it just seemed that way.
If he wants to stay then I am fine with that. It really looks like Mangini wouldnt let him coach the way he wanted to coach this team. So im fine with him staying. But if he goes. It isnt the end of the world.
If Favre is indeed the Jets qb, it would be a huge mistake if Schotty walked. It's not an easy thing for the team to have to learn brand new schemes, when it's really not necessary to do so.
I was talking with a Giant fan here at work yesterday about this, and without agreeing with you on it being a mistake, the thing, the understanding, that makes keeping Schott more logical is if the team thinks that will induce Favre to come back, assuming as I do that is what they want. The other assumption is that Favre likes Schott, which I have no idea whether that is true, but the FO apparently thinks it is. Think about it. Continuity on O, with the playbook and schemes, would be important to Favre, right? Unless he doesn't want to play for Schott, I can't thnk of a better reason why the FO would want Schott back.
