If he declares, he'll be my favorite defensive back prospect...he's got to be the player to watch tonight in the Sugar Bowl. He plays corner for the Utes, but he'll probably move to safety in the NFL.

He's shut down every receiver he's faced this season -- he's done this in a conference (Mountain West) that throws A LOT. If he has a great game tonight against the nation's top freshman receiver, Julio Jones, then he could solidify himself as a first rounder. He has 5 INTs, and a few of them were late in the 4th quarter...some of the plays he's made over this season have kept Utah undefeated.

He should run in the low 4.4s, and he's got great size at 6'3 215.

As a corner prospect, he's behind Malcolm Jenkins, Vontae Davis, and Alphonso Smith, but in my opinion, he's a better prospect than Mike Mickens, Darius Butler, and DJ Moore.

If we're looking for a free safety, he'll be around for our pick at 17...

Sean Smith did look impressive tonight. One guy I lost interest in after watching tonight's game is Rashad Johnson, -- not only did I not see him make any big plays, I hardly saw him on the field. Granted it might be only 1 game, but its a big game not to show up.

But is it a free safety we need or a strong safety?
We already have K. Rhodes, I was hoping for a strong safety like William Moore (Mizzou) or Emanuel Cook (SC).

Drafting a guy who can play CB or S would be good because Lowery might pan out.

I just think we should pick the best safety available regardless of the free/strong thing, besides i think someone mentioned that we play more of a left/right thing more than anything i that makes any sense.

Honestly havent ever seen Sean Smith play but the measurables add up ,6'3 214 corner/safety who runs a 4.3 it looks great on paper, and since we need depth at both positions it makes sense to look at him. He'll probably come out making this safety class even more deeper

I'd prefer the SS position filled with someone who can fly up & make tackles in run support & is a sure tackler (Troy Pomalou).
Granted the draft is 4 months away, but chances are leaning towards Taylor Mays (USC - if he even declares) & William Moore (Missouri) will be gone by the time our pick coms up.
Sean Smith & Emanuel Cook (S. Carolina) would be solid 2nd rounders.
Whats the story about Patrick Chung of Oregon? - I didnt get to see Oregon once this year.

Before the college season began a made a list of Top 22 Cover 2 CBs (for illiteration purposes) and Smith was tops on that list. I am pretty sure he will stay at CB unless the team that drafts him is stocked at CB and thin at S like Eagles. I think he is best suited to play on a Cover 2 defense as a CB like the Bucs.

As for Patrick Chung I don't like him at all. He didn't impress me all season and he did nothing to improve his standing in Oregon's bowl game. There are at least 10 safeties I'd rather get from the draft.

Sean Smith can hit though...he's a very physical corner and he has the size to play safety.

I love his cover skills as a corner. Smith's great in man-to-man. He's shut down every receiver he's faced this season.

He reminds me of current Browns free safety Brodney Pool. Pool is an excellent cover safety, and he's even started a few games at corner for Cleveland. They're both very, very versatile defensive backs. Both play a very physical game.

Smith also plays a similar style to Kerry Rhodes. Rangy, tall DBs that move to the ball and aren't afraid to hit.

This kid has the potential to be a future star at the next level.

    No, #10 was Stevenson Sylvester.
He was all over the field.
I saw him get into it with Antoine Caldwell during the opening coin toss because he was trying to stare down Alabama QB John Parker Wilson.

I agree that he has the ability to be a good FS much like Malcolm Jenkins from Ohio State, but both of those guys will be best at CB in the NFL.

Sean Smith reminds me of Shawn Springs before the injuries (in his early Seattle years).

I don't really get the comparison, other than both guys are great cover corners.

Springs is 3 inches shorter, 15 to 20 pounds lighter, and a lot faster.

3 inches shorter and about 15 lbs lighter, yes, but both have great size for the CB position.

Also, Springs is not a lot faster than Smith. Smith is going to run a sub 4.4 most likely and he looks every bit as fast on the field.

Both are great cover guys who also excel in zone with the ball/man in front of them, and both are/were physical.

Regardless, if Smith declares he will be a 2nd-3rd round prospect and not taken 3rd overall like Springs was which will be their biggest difference.

Yeah that dude was everywhere.....does anyone know how he might project as a OLB in a 3-4?.....assuming we stay with that next year.

    Sean has declared....Good Move!!

    January 12
(7:00 PM): Second Ute defender heads to draft… Utah junior CB Sean Smith reportedly will declare for the 2009 draft. The 6-2, 210-pound Smith joins sophomore DE Paul Kruger in the upcoming draft class. Smith tied for the Mountain West Conference lead with five interceptions this fall and projects to go in the second or third round this coming April if as expected he is able to run in the sub-4.4 range at the combine.

I like Paul Kruger too - he's a definite 4-3 defensive end...but I think he'll be successful wherever he ends up.

By Taylor Mays supposedly staying in school Smith has a good chance of going round one. His stock will soar if he run a sub 4.4. I personally think he can stay at corner.

I'm a huge fan of Sean Smith and am praying he ends up in Green and White, I'd love to take him in the second round.
