Eric Mangini, fired on Monday by the New York Jets, is emerging as the favorite to become the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, team and league sources said Saturday.

The Browns have continued their search process, interviewing other candidates, but sources say Mangini had a "compelling" interview and owner Randy Lerner is fascinated with him.

If Mangini gets the job to replace the fired Romeo Crennel, the favorite to become the team's general manager is George Kokinis, who is the director of pro personnel for the Baltimore Ravens, the sources said.

Kokinis and Mangini each were members of the Browns organization when Bill Belichick was coach. Mangini formally joined the staff as an assistant coach in 1995. Kokinis was a scout from 1991 to 1995 before moving with the team to Baltimore.

Scott Pioli, the Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel, has been considered the favorite for the GM job, but sources say his demands were "extreme," and Lerner is hesitant to accept the terms unless there is some level of compromise.

Pioli is scheduled to interview with the Kansas City Chiefs no later than Monday.

If Pioli is hired, the leading head coaching candidates are believed to be Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who also has interviewed with Lerner.

Even though Kokinis would be the leading GM candidate with Mangini as coach, current Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight also is in the running.

Lerner's firing of former GM Phil Savage had little or nothing to do with Savage's personnel decisions; Lerner specifically said the dismissal stemmed from a difference in "management style."

Cleveland has a lot of talent, it'd be a pretty solid landing spot for him

That's what I've been thinking too. He's probably so pissed he'll build this team with one opponent in mind... the NY Jets.

You darksiders are absolutely hillarious. Cleveland has a spotty defense and Mangini was a fraud, but sure, alright.

    Mangini favorite for Cleveland job

How wonderful...he will have a job and the Jets will still be jerking themselves off...

Great. Everyone was on board to fire this j.o. just like they were on board to release Pennington. Why do I feel like he's going to turn that franchise around?

Mangini and Cleveland perfect together. QB controversy a defense with no identity and disgruntled superstar TE no running game. Mangini will fail miserably.

Mangini Emerging as front Runner in Cleveland

Randy Lerner was "blown away" by the interview with Mangini. Scott Pioli made to many requests to come in to cleveland so looks like he will land elsewhere, the potential new GM and Mangini have former ties to Cleveland and looks like our man will not be out of work for long. Figures the Jets head coach fired will be the first of a long line of older coaches and hot assistants to get rehired, amazing
I am beginning to believe we fucked this up again. Should have brought in new DC and moved ahead.

This really isn't any surprise. I was shooting the breeze with a friend about this over coffee just this morning. Followed up by, "His road to Canton has just begun..."

The only controversy left in Cleveland is when will Quinn be healthy enough to play again. Anderson sucks and proved that last season. He's done for the Browns.

The Team has some talent. MAngini is still learning on the fly and hopefully will do a better job at in game management for them. That was his biggest weakness.

Living in Ohio, I've heard that Romeo would have no problem coming back as the DC of the Browns, if Mangini got the Job. Lerner even said it could be "something not to rule out".

You gave up a young talented coach, for a qb, who didn't want to play for you in the first place, and has one foot on a bananna peel, and the other in the gutter.
