The Rooney Rule is a joke. It was only implemented because Johnny Cochran threatened to sue the NFL for discrimination. By implementing the rule they made Cochran and his client happy and avoided a law suit.
seriously one of the most stupid rules...offense to minorities but are they just trying to make them feel special?
I'm liking Leslie Frazier the more i read about him. If San Fran didn't sign Mike Singletary, i would be going for him. But im glad Singletary got the job. He was long overdue. My view of the Rooney Rule is this: it's run its course. I think that all of us can say now the NFL teams are hiring the best man for the job regarless of color. What topped it off was when Lovie and Dungy were coaching in the SB and Dungy became the 1st black coach to win the SB. Back then, the Rooney rule was definitely needed. Now, its just and waste of time and to be honest an embarrasment to minorities. Why, b/c minorities are being brought in just to meet the criteria of a rule and won't even be seriously considered for the job b/c the team already had their sights set on someone else. Let's say hypothetically, Cowher was all on board for the HC job for the jets. but b/c of the rooney rule, everything would have to be put on hold. It's like: "Hold on Cowher, we gotta interview this black guy first. You know, rooney rule and everything. But keep your phone on b/c after i let the league offices know we interviewed a minority i can bring you on." This defeats the whole purpose of the rule. I know racism still exists but its a new era in the nfl. We got Lovie, Dungy, Tomlin, Marvin, Singletary, Edwards and, until recently Romeo. Can this stupid rule, already
Full of fire and brimstone but I dont see the knowledge of the complete game of football coming from Bryan Cox.Besides the JETS organization at this point and time cannot be the riverboat gamblers with the next selection of a head coach.
i say this minority requirement bullshit ends...our presidents black for god sake! get over it!! jews...now jews have an arguement...
The thing that kills me about this rule is that no black or other minority candidate will be turned away from a head coaching job because of their race or skin color. If a team feels that a coach gives them the best shot of becoming a Super Bowl contender, they are going to get hired. It is that simple. The glass ceiling was shattered a long time ago. It simply is a matter of merit at this point.
Please don't compare a hall of fame LB with an average at best LB who constantly showed up his teammates when he felt he was the only one doing his job on the field.
Ok, then let's bring in LT. He makes Singletary look average and when LT isn't making it snow in the locker room he at least can teach them how to play golf. he his good enough to get his PGA card.
Please enlighten me. How is comparing an average at best LBs attitude with a hall of fame LBs attitude? In fact, how many of the greatest players ever to play the game went on to have extremely successful coaching careers? You took my post totally out of context.
The problem wasn't that owners were incredibly racist and wouldn't hire black coaches, it was that the only candidates interviewed used to be members of the old boys network (read: white guys.) Talented candidates like Mike Tomlin or Mike Singletary wouldn't even get interviews because nobody knew about them or cared to find out. That said, the rule has clearly run its course. Something like it is desperately needed to circulate more diverse names in the NCAA though.
