1) Attempt to sign Cowher to start coaching in 2010. Offer him money in 2009 just for locking up a coaching contract in 2010. It seems like Cowher is simply not coaching in '09 and as he's said in the past will come back in 2010. Why not lock him up now, even if we have to pay him for '09? If the major hurdle in signing him is that he's not going to coach until 2010, lock him up now. 2) Promote Westhoff for one year as the head coach, with the understanding that he will be replaced by Cowher in 2010. Westhoff has been with the team for a long time, has been around the game forever, and has coached along sides greats such as Shula and Parcells. Give the man a shot to run the show for a year while maintaining some continuity in the locker room. From what I've read the players really respect him and listen to him. At his age, it wouldn't be wise for him or any team to take him on as a head coach. But for one year, it could work out very well in this situation. Perhaps it's something he's always wanted to try and a one year deal would be perfect for him. 3) Allow Cowher to choose the offensive and defensive coordinators. This will be his only required task for 2009. Let's face it both coordinators need to be replaced. When Cowher starts coaching in 2010, his coordinators will already have a great feel for the team and be able to assist him in asimilating himself with the Jets. 4) Demote Schottenheimer to QB coach where he was successful in San Diego (Brees, Rivers). Not much to say here. He's done a great job as a QB coach and the guy we have now really hasn't IMO. Maybe the current QB coach can move back to WR coach. 5) Fire Sutton. Again, not much to say.
The hell with Cowher its now or never. The JETS dont need another head case all about me head coach. I say pass on Cowher.
weird idea... i kinda like it. it feels almost like when we signed bill parcells as a special consultant or whatever they called it.
that would make the Jets the biggest laughing stock in the league. talk about instability. and what if Westhoff does great, what do you do then? you think the players would be happy to get rid of a coach that did an amazing job and maybe loved playing for just because Bill Cowher has a better track record? this has to be the absolute worst thread ever posted in TGG's football forum. now that's the way to start the new year off with a bang.
It would be similar to having an interim head coach. If Westhoff does great, than that's an added bonus. At his age, you cannot expect him to be able to handle the grind that an NFL head coach has to deal with for an extended period of time. If everyone knows the deal before hand, I don't think it would be an issue at the end of '09 regardless of success. I've seen some pretty bad threads. This isn't even the worst one on page one today. He promised his family he wouldn't coach again until 2010. I'd be willing to bet that's the reason he's not coaching this year, despite all the rumors.
although this post is quite harsh (as i've seen far shittier threads posted in this forum, so that comment was totally unwarranted).i do agree with this opinion. The Jets would be a laughing stock. Cowher doesn't want to be here....personally or professionally, it doesn't matter. I want a HC that wants to be here.
You hire an interim head coach if one gets fired during the season, you don't start a new season with an interim coach. This is wrong on so many levels that it's very hard for me to believe that you're serious.
This is obviously not your standard approach I'm suggesting here. There is no reason why you cannot have an interim head coach prior to the season. Just because it's not the norm doesn't mean it's unreasonable. I appreciate that people might not like the idea, but the reasoning so far seems silly to me. What's so wrong on so many levels? We'd be a laughing stock? Why?
There is one way to get Cowher and one way only............ Hookers and Midgets. Woody should hire a bunch and watch Cowher come crawling.
it's not even close to an interim head coach because interim head coaches are performing with the opportunity to keep the job. in mid season of a losing season you have the luxury of giving a candidate on-the-job practice to determine whether they are a good choice because the season is already a throw-away. once you tell Westhoff it doesn't matter how well he does, he's getting replaced, the dynamics of the two become completely different. but if you are going with a full season interim coach, then just like the end of a losing season where there is nothing to lose, the team would inherently be conceding the season waiting for next year. to do so would reveal the most inept front office in sports history. so your suggestion fails on that merit alone. why the heck would Cowher want to coach an organization like that which would conceding an entire season simply to wait for him. just the suggestion to Cowher would make him less interested in the Jets, not more. and you are actually defending it! there's a reason it doesn't happen -- it's ridiculous.
Hey dude...i can appreciate you thinking "outside-the-box", believe me. Compared to some of the other ideas from other posters on this board ("hey guys, let's rehire Mangini"...jesus christ ) this one isn't as far-fetched. What i meant by "laughing stock" is that the Jets will be perceived as "desperate" for their "incessant slobbering" over Bill Cowher. Don't get me wrong, I wanted Cowher....but making special concessions for him (waiting till 2010 for example) is going a little far in the "perks dept", imo. What if Cowher decides to pull a Belichick and back out of his deal?? the Jets already look stupid with the ramifications of bringing in Brett Favre and letting Penny go....i don't think this idea would go over too well with the masses...if it blew up in Woody's face. Just my 2 cents.
you haven't answered the question. what do you do if Westhoff does well? your scenario dictates that you fire him, even if he wins 13 games. you think that is the type of organization that would ever attract players or talented coaches ever again? your defense of the suggestion is as ludicrous as the suggestion itself.
