That's a great point. Why would Rex be passed over by so many teams? What do they know that we don't?
It could simply be a case of 2 things, they may have felt he wasnt ready yet, and he may have needed another year of seasoning. Also he may not have fit what those teams were looking for. I know why he didnt get hired in Miami. Bill Parcells wanted Sparano, plain and simple. As for Atlanta, I don't know what they were looking for particularly, besides a fresh start. I also know why Baltimore passed him over, they wanted an offensive coach very badly, they had a kick ass defense (with a kick ass coordinator, who apparently wasnt going anywhere) and so they decided to bring in Harbaugh. So my thought is maybe Atlanta just felt either he needed a little more seasoning, or that maybe he wasnt the squeaking clean guy they needed to start off with a clean slate after the Vick Scenario. Regardless, they all seemed to have things work out for them this year, so they arent complaining, and if we land Ryan this year, I doubt we will be upset they passed on him either...
I'm glad to see all this instant love for Spags has dropped back to reality. Rex is way more qualified and would bring in more experienced DC & OC.
I think a lot of people see spags as what he is, the guy deserves a shot at a head coaching job, if not this year, then definately next year. I agree completely that Rex is the better option for the Jets right now than Spags. But I want to know why you think Ryan would bring in better coordinators than Spags? Now granted I am very much in favor of Ryan, he is the guy I want the Jets to nab, but I have no idea who would be brought in as coordinators...
Why do some think Rex has more experience than Spags? They both have about 9 yrs in the NFL. Rex w/the Ravens and Spags w/Philly & NYG. Both have done well as assistants - who would be better as a HC and why?
Rex has a lifetime of experience and being in/around the NFL. He has connections through his father , brother and one ones he has built himself. Spags might be the next bright thing, but Rex has respect from every player in the NFL and no defense has been more domminant than the Ravens over his time with the team. Spags would be more likely to bring in a younger OC & DC who would also be rookies at their position. Most coaches prefer not to bring in assistant who have a lot more experience they they do. Rex would be more likely to bring in ex-HCs or lateral moves like his brother. I am no one special but if I were a experienced OC or DC I would rather put my career in the hands of Rex than I would Spags who has no offensive or 3-4 experience and would need to rely soley on his other coaches. I feel Rex would be willing to take all the brunt of a bad season and Spags would give up an assistance as the goat like we are so use to seeing. Just a feeling I have....
I think you have all made excellent observations. I don't have anything bad to say about Spagnuolo I echo alot of what has been said here. My thought though is Rex R
Now that is incredibly insightful Jetsfan. Another thing to think about when picking a coach. This is going to be an interesting couple of weeks as we watch this all unfold. And make no mistake I expect this to take at least a couple of weeks, because we cannot interview Ryan while the ravens are in the playoffs, and we cannot offer Spags a job while the giants are in the playoffs. These are the two guys I want hired, I would prefer Ryan, but would have no complaints about Spags.
I think you have all made excellent observations. I don't have anything bad to say about Spagnuolo I echo alot of what has been said here. My thought though is Rex Ryan fits this team better. I wouldn't mind the thought of Shanahan. Plus Ryan is an Okie like me.
rex ryan. he would most likely bring some good assistants from the ravens with him. i would be very interested to see how kerry rhodes looks with the coaching staff that has helped make ed reed the best saftey in football. im not trying to say kerry is as good as ed because he probably isn't, but reed would have had trouble making any plays if he was used like rhodes was used this past season. we have enough pieces on offense to be serviceable, so if someone can turn this defense into a dominant unit i like the jets chances of winning games.
Rex's resume and heritage: COACHING BACKGROUND: 1987-88 (Eastern Kentucky); 1989 (New Mexico Highlands); 1990-93 (Morehead State); 1994-95 (Arizona Cardinals); 1996-97 (University of Cincinnati); 1998 (Oklahoma); 1999-2007 (Baltimore Ravens) *Ryan Family's 6 Super Bowls: Buddy: 1968 (NY-Jets), 1976 (Vikings), 1985 (Bears); Rex: 2000 (Ravens); Rob: 2001, 2003 (Patriots)
Exactly! And don't tell me you never felt this defense could be dominant this season. We have a lot of pieces for a great 3-4, solid ends, a dominating force at NT, a great ILB in Harris, Pace has been great for us. We have one of the best cover corners in the NFL in Revis, and Rhodes has definately had his moments. We have pieces on the D, we just need somebody to help us put it all together, and domination is within reach!
I'm going to support the candidate with the simplest name, as I can't bear seeing all the misspellings that this forum is capable of.
bingo! rex gets his football knowledge from his dad, just like bellicheat and the mannings. buddy always said that being the jets head coach was his dream job. getting rex the job will also allow buddy to perhaps advise him/us about players on the defense/drafts.
Rex is probably the best 3-4 DC in the league and has put together great defenses for years now. Rex is aggressive, outgoing, and gets the best out of his players. I'd have no problem with Spagnuolo, but Rex is my favorite of any candidate considered thus far.
As of now the vote stands a 67-37 in favor of Rex Ryan. almost a 2:1 ratio after 104 votes. I think this speaks volumes about which assistant our board would prefer to see come in and coach for us next year.
