Jets set to inteview Ravens' Ryan December 31, 2008 The Jets have received permission to interview Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, a team source said today. No interview has been scheduled; by league rule, the Jets can't speak with Ryan until the Ravens are eliminated from the playoffs. They face the Dolphins this weekend.
Just out of curiosity, why are they able to interview Spagnuolo, but not Ryan? Is it because of the bye week?
Correct. Any coach on a playoff team with a bye could be interviewed this week on specific days when the team was off. I don't know if the off days are set by the team or the NFL (I assume the team; I think Spags had Thursday and Saturday availability this week, for example).
if we go with a rookie coach this guy would be my pick, if not him then Josh McDaniels from the Patriots.
I think at the end of the day, Ryan will be the next Jets coach. I think the Jets would like Shanny, but I don't think that feeling is mutual. Jets seem to like the new fresh defensive coach, and Ryan has been interviewed in the past, so his time is here.
Rex has loads more experience than Spaq and would scare the hell out of some of the players. Talk about motivational speaker!
I think Ryan really got snubbed last year when the three teams he applied to all decided to go with other candidates, his own team included. The only thing I'm weary about is bringing on another unproven HC. Sure, he was Asst. HC to John Harbaugh, but do we really want someone who was an assistant to another rookie coach with little experience, regardless of what Harbaugh has done with the Ravens this season. Also, this is the same Rex Ryan that has coached under Brian Billick, another thing that makes me weary. The only experience this guy has is with one mediocre coach, and an unproven rookie. Perhaps the only fit is that he runs a 3-4...a very good 3-4 that I wouldn't mind having here. Also, he's got the connect with a Mr. Ray Lewis who by the way becomes a FA this year! Dun dun dun!
the key for first year HC is to hire experienced coordinators, at least on the other side of the ball from their experience.
I never thought of Ray Lewis as a factor, but the possibility is there. Rex has consistanbtly run the best 3-4 defense in the league. He would be a guy I wouldn't complain about. First time since Bill Parcells left and the shitty one day of BB that I would actually like the HC hire.
Rex would be more able to draw in better coordinators than Spags would. Plus he could run his own 3-4 defense ina crunch.
I don't want a rookie HC. But if we are forced with one, I'd probably go with Rex Ryan. Which means we'll get someone else.
