The problem with Pete Carroll is he is a great college coach, but not a great NFL coach. The guy knows football, but doesn't have the motivational skills for the NFL. You don't have to motivate college football players, they're self motivated. They want to make it to the big leagues and are hungry. So if you know your X's and O's, and are a good recruiter, you can be a good college coach. A bunch of millionaire players definitely may not be self motivated and may not be hungry. I mean think about it, if you get benched in college you may never see the NFL. If you get benched in the NFL you already got your signing bonus, and collected a hefty salary for awhile. Thats why I think there is a huge difference between coaching in college and coaching in the NFL. If you're a college coach you gotta be good in the living room, meaning you gotta get players to come play for your school. If you're an NFL coach you have to continually be able to motivate players for no other reason to than to want to be great, cause they already have everything else. I think its been proven that Pete Carroll is alot better in the living room than in the NFL.

He might get the itch ever so often to coach in the NFL, but I'm sure he rolls over with the warm Cali sunny and his loyal following chanting his name and realizes what a great thing he has...He is a god at USC, calls all the shots and makes a BOATLOAD of money

Carroll has it made in USC; he wouldn't leave for any amount of money. Actually, at this point; he does not have to worry about money at all.

Actually, I think the NFL may have been a bit too big for him. Granted, he got shafted worse than Mangini, but I doubt he would consider coming back to the Jets under any circumstances.

Plus, I do not think he would be the popular candidate by the majority of the fan base.

While that is true. It isn't like he flopped in the NFL.

An idiot owner fired him after 1 season, in Leon Hess.

And after posting a Division Title, a playoff win, another playoff appearance, and then getting fired after going 8-8? Robert Kraft said that was one of the hardest decisions he has ever made.

That doesn't warrant another shot? Especially if he'd be interested in the job?

    +1

No NFL team was better prepared to play pickup basketball than the 1994 Jets.

Not that anyone will agree with me and I really don give a hoot, I think the Jets made a huge mistake in not giving Pete a 4 year window.

Do any of you remember that defense! Man we were deadly for a while there and then that spike game....

It is my firm belief that in time Pete would have developed into a excellent NFL coach and gotten the best out of the NYJ. Matter of fact he might be still coaching the Jets today and many of us would have been forefilled because he might have been the one to get to the big show and win it.

The man is excellent at X's & O's and has a very good football mind. Look at the program he has put together at USC and the talent he is always bring in and this should answer a few more questions and issues that might crop up about his NFL ability.

Was he a little to easy going in his first go around with the Jets, no doubt. Yet, he was young and would have gotten a little stronger and harder with a year or two more on expereince. Do you recall any displine problems coming out of USC now, his players in lots of trouble with the law?

No friends Pete has no reason to leave USC, yet if he does pray he goes to the NFC, because he will field a team of warriors who will be prepared to play ball and kick ass....

He appears on Boston sports radio every now and then. He still has connections to the area, believe it or not. The guy who he used as a media consultant is now a drive-time morning radio guy on the sports talk radio, and he remains friendly with his lawyer - a Boston glitterati lawyer named Harry Mannion. A few years back, you MIGHT have coaxed Pete Carroll out of USC and back to the NFL. Now, you'd have to fist-fight his wife. If he'd take any NFL position at all, it would be as the coach and GM as L.A.'s new franchise, if and whenever that ever happens. Otherwise, he's making more in endorsements than he is in salary, and his contract term at USC exceeds anything he'll get from the NFL. He could literally make $7-8 million for the next 30 years. Can't do that anywhere in the NFL. Nor could could achieve god-like status like he has in Los Angeles. Nick Saban should be Exhibit A on this point. He got it. There are 32 NFL coaches and only 4-5 that you would consider untouchable. Maybe.

The day Pete Carroll starts fielding NFL offers is the day he should be excluded for stupidity. Funny thing - I think he knows that.

No, and I'll tell you why. He took over the Patriots job the year after Parcells brought them to the Super Bowl. Parcells went to the Jets, and Carroll was his replacement in New England. So Carroll got a team that made it to the Super Bowl in New England, and what did he do with it? He gradually sustained a worse and worse record, and the Jets took over the division. You can't compare a great college coach with a great NFL coach. Pete Carroll is a great college coach at USC, but he has proven that he is not an NFL coach. I mean look at Nick Saban, the guy is a great college coach after turning around Alabama! But he gave up on the Dolphins, after being mediocre. There is an absolute difference in the two levels of football and the way you have to coach the players. Look at Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, and Lou Holtz for all of you older guys. The last four coaches were great college coaches but all failed in the NFL.

Carroll has one of the best jobs in football and he's well aware of it. This is not worth talking about.

Agreed - look what happened to the Butch Davis's and Nick Sabens of the coaching worlds when they hit the NFL. Granted, Carrol had some success in the pros, but I can only imagine his experiences with the Jets and Pats left a sour taste in his mouth.

What is it with all these coach threads. I have no problem with a well thought out suggestion but people are like pull names out of thin air that make no sense. How about Vince Lombardi (oh snap he's dead) or maybe Bob Stoops (man Oklahoma looked great this year). The Jets need a coach who defensively sound who can motivate with a winning track record in the NFL. What they don't need is a flashy high profiled name to sell PSLs for Woody. Omg lets get Joe Namath to coach the team!

My theory is that Carroll keeps the NFL rumors going in order to get USC to pay him more. If he ever came out and said SC is the only place he wants to coach at he'd end up working for minimum wage.
