About half an hour ago, Joe Beningo was on another of his tirades (he was right about the first one, BTW, when he called for Woody to fire Mangini). He said that, according to his sources, Cowher will come to the Jets ONLY IF he gets complete control. That would mean, according to Beningo, that Woody has to let go of Mike Tannenbaum. He's saying Woody has to do that. He was addressing Woody as if he were listeniung to the show, saying: "Woody, if you truly want the NY premium franchise you're looking for and you really want to sell your PSLs, this is a no brainer. To bring in a talent like Cowher, a known winner, SB champion, and if you really want to be equal to the Giants in the new stadium and be the NY franchise you're looking to be, YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE COWHER WHAT HE WANTS AND HIRE HIM! If it means getting rid of Mike Tannenbaum (and I like Mike... he's a very good GM in my opinion), but you're got to bring Cowher in here." He's going as far as to say that Tanny must go if that's what it takes to bring a known winner like Cowher in here. My own personal opinion is that I'm not sure a comprimise can't be reached whereby Tanny becomes the Cap Manager again... you just have to pay the guy like he was a GM or work it out with Tanny somehow. But I thought Beningo's opinion was interesting, particularly because he made that call on the firing of Mangini. Thoughts?
I really don't see why Tanny can't become cap manager again, that IS what he does best. If they are really going to go on with the whole dog and pony show, I just cannot imagine a scenario where Mr T. prevents the arrival of The Chin.
Beningo wanted Mangini in the first place, so did Somers and all these other know-it-alls that now wanted him gone. Did Mangini trade for Favre? Did he throw 22 picks?
I'm starting to think Beningo isn't wrong. Make Tanny take a back seat to whatever Cowher is comfortable with and let's get this show on the freakin' roiad.
Eh, I love Beningo, but I've just got this feeling Cowher will be another Holmgren/Gruden if he came here. I guess we'll never know now!
You have to give something to get something. In this case, we have to give Mike Tannenbaum. A more than fair trade.
I agree...we don't need to fire Tanny, but just ease up a bit. Maybe focus on other areas, and let Cowher do his thing. This town IS big enough for the two of them, so I have to believe that some compromise can be reached.
Give Tannenbaum a promotion to Team President and give him a corner office so he can work out the salaries. Let Cowher bring in his Football people like Parcells did and build the franchise again. Why does everything with the Jets have to be so f'n hard?
Exactly. There has to be some way in which this can be worked out. I can't imagine a businessman like Woody would just simply pass up an opportunity like Cowher without giving it any kind of creative thought.
No, but he screwed up enough in game calls, which contributed to our losing games, and missing the playoffs. He also made no in game adjustments, to deal with our inablity to score points, or create any sort of pass rush. Shall i continue?
Yes that would be a great move by Woody but like I said in another thread if Woody is going to keep his bean counter GM instead of hiring the best head coach available that shows me Woody isn't committed to winning just selling tickets with a few name guys. It's really a shame because I thought Woody was going to do whatever was necessary to win a championship.
I agree, this is a no-brainer. You need a proven winner and football mastermind like Cowher to turn this mess around fast. Woody, if for no other reason, Cowher will sell those PSLs you value so much and bring credibility to this team. Does Woody have the cahones to restructure the front office and let Cowher lead this team to respectability? I doubt it, but I'm praying he has an epiphany and sees the light.
I'm not sure how reliable this is...because Clayton is the source....but at the bottom of his article...it mentions Cowher will be addressing this on the CBS pre-playoff show this Sunday. I hope Woody takes his head out of the sand before then and gives Cowher the keys to the green/white cadillac.
Someone on the show just now is saying the reports are inaccurate and the Cowher talks aren't dead yet.
If all this is true, then it looks like Cowher is negotiating hard which is his right. But W will not negotiate from weakness and just give BC whatever he wants--and fire a guy who's been very good and obviously very loyal. I think a comprimise can be reached but I changed my mind on Cowher. I don't think he wants this bad enough and I don't think he has the staying power for more than one season.
Something odd is going on behind the scenes with Cowher...I'm not really sure what it is but I have the feeling that Mangini might've been out the door as early as the Monday after the Buffalo game. They've probably been in contact with Bill for some time. Cowher has always had top notch coordinators to handle the nuts and bolts, x's and o's. Haslett, LeBeau, Earhardt, Capers. I'm not sure he's much without them. Right now the best defensive mind in football next to Belichick is Steve Spagnuolo. Hire him as Head Coach (Head Defensive Coordinator really) Keep Schotty as OC or hand the keys to Callahan.
