When you actually look at Cowher's record, you will see a guy who is really no different than Jon Gruden and Mike Holmgren. He has a Super Bowl, but he had a lot of seasons of mediocrity sprinkled in there too. The difference between Cowher and those other coaches is that Cowher stayed on the same team for a long time and never had personnel power. The Steelers always had a terrific organization in place, with an owner who stressed continuity and a good GM. I mean, I highly doubt Mike Tomlin is such a terrific coach, and look at the success he is having with Pitt. I'm not disparaging the guy, but you have to wonder if he's that great, or if they just have an excellent organization there. When Gruden and Holmgren went to new teams and had personnel power, their teams struggled. With exception to his one Super Bowl appearance, Holmgren's Seahawks teams basically were average, as have Gruden's Bucs teams. I believe your're all excited about Cowher because of the faces that he makes during the games. He'll be a helluva a lot more entertaining than Mangini was on the sidelines, but honestly, we're looking at another Holmgren and Gruden situation if the guy gets full control. HE DOES NOT DESERVE IT.
Gruden is 57-55? Hasn't won a PLAYOFF game since his Superbowl with Dungy's team...He can't draft worth a shit, he cannot settle on a QB...Players badmouth him on their way out... Cowher at least won playoff games and was always consistent... That being said, if Gruden were to become available, and Cowher said no...I'd take Gruden.
Gruden and Holmgrem are nice coaches but not nearly the success of Cowher there first time around or second. He coached 15yrs, 10 playoffs and off the top of my head played in a minimum of 5 afc championship games- I know this is a minimum as he made to superbowls and lost 3 home championship games. I believe he might have lost one more on rd in NE- at a minimum that is getting to the "FINAL FOUR" 33% of the time. We have made the championship game - twice sense 69. That is what its all about 1/3 of time watching your team play for a chance to play in the game to get to the super bowl. Come On. yes it sells PSLS- yes he is a face and would be fun, bottom line the guy has incredible success rate.
I want Cowher because he is a winner. Seriously, look up the facts before posting such nonsense. 10 playoff appearances in 15 years; 2 Super Bowl appearances; 8 division titles; and only 3 losing seasons (again, in 15 years). Cowher consistently is a winner. True Story.
Well, all things considered, if he's looking to bring in his own GM, thats a bad thing. For the price tag, having a tandem come in and essentially Learn on the Job one end of the team paradigm, would be foolish. You'd be better off getting Parcells back for the rest of Favre's tenure, and groom a head coach from within the organization. Including having RAC back as DC, to study under Parcells...

That's my point, though. What did Gruden do to deserve personnel control with Tampa Bay? Not much. He got it, and hasn't been able to balance out the two. We are giving Bill Cowher personnel control why, exactly? He'd be another Marty if Rooney didn't keep giving him chances.

Marty Schottenheimer's record is what I posted above. He's a winner. Lets fire Tannenbaum and make him GM as well as coach.
Basically, if you support firing Tannenbaum to make Cowher GM and Coach, then you must feel the same way about Schottenheimer, since they have nearly identical ideologies and records. The only difference being that Hunt, Modell, and whoever the hell owns the Chargers had higher expectations than Rooney, that being the Super Bowl. Again, Cowher just had a much more stable situation in Pitt than Schotty ever had in his 3 stops. Both of them are ultra-conservative frustrating coaches, and I want neither of them here. The Jets need their own John Harbaugh, Tony Sparano, or Mike Smith. Enough of these old retreads.
I wouldn't mind Marty, I'd prefer Cowher though. Woody isn't going to allow any coach be GM as well. He may allow them to bring in their own GM and relegate Tanny to a role that's mostly accounting for a while
Yeah, well like I've stated, I'm not opposed to Cowher coming in here as Head Coach. I just don't believe this guy deserves the ability to overhaul our entire Front Office, especially since we have a quality GM here. He has not earned that right. He's no Bill Parcells. Not even close.
Schott has won 5 of 13 playoff games (38%) Cowher has won 12 of 21 playoff games (57%) They have nearly identical regular season win percentage. Cowher has won the big game, Schott has not. True Story.
Cowher also had an excellent GM and a stable regime. Schott went from team to team because they were ousting him for the same fallacies Cowher had until that miracle Super Bowl run in 2006.
Cowher played in 21 playoff games in 15 seasons. Schott played in 13 playoff games in 21 seasons. There is a reason teams fired Schotty. With that said, I admit that past performance is not necessarily an indicator of future performance.
