Wouldn't that be a kick in the ass? Take it one step further. Mangini goes to the Browns and turns the whole team around, then eliminates us from the playoffs in '09 by defeating us at home.
Mangini had two winning season out of three. Took the team from 4-12 to 9-7. There was no one playing the QB position for the last 5 games. A team like Detroit should take him. His first year with the jets -- when he felt he had nothing to lose -- he was creative but organized. The Jets went into the 4th Q with 3 time outs. They quick snapped, they adjusted -- they took advantage of other teams slowness to the line etc. He could be like Bellichek was in Cleveland.
He'll be the new Pete Carroll. Carroll's Jets, like Mangini's, collapsed down the stretch. Mangini should go coach at Wesleyan.
I agree with original poster. We did not give Mangini enough time. Such is coaching life in football, especially in a city like NY. But you gotta be more patient than that. There are no quick fixes. Well, except Belichik and Parcells maybe, but generally not. Certainly not from a rookie head coach. Think about this: he inherited 4-12 team. 3 years later we are 9-7 with a play-off appearance to boot in Eric's first year. And Mangini now has years of expereince. It is perfect time to KEEP the guy, not boot him, now that he has expereince. And we finally are able to beat mighty rival NE. We did it this year, we did it in his first year (no one did in reg season last year). Mangini is really fired because of last five games. If you look at these games though, except Denver, we really stayed in every game. If we had half decent production from QB, we are easily 4-1. If we had Pennington (#2 overall in NFL rated this year), maybe we are 5-0. Favre is the one who dropped the ball, not Mangini. Did you see how many times he missed WIDE OPEN receivers. How many times he threw right into the hands of defenders. On short passes too!!! Mangini gave us a chance to win in 4 of last 5 games. But you can't win when you give the ball away so many times, and it's not like these were forced TOs. They were stupid mistakes by Favre. Mangini is a scapegoat, who deserved another chance after turning this team around from 4-12 to 9-7 without any experience, and in spite of Favre. Gave a us a play-off appearance too and finally beat NE. He deserved another shot, and we, Jet fans, are the losers for not having him back. Just like we were when Chad was released.
For the 20th time what proof do you have that he lost the team? The team just played like crap, but I see zero evidence he lost them and they didn't play hard.
yeah this is exactly whats gonna happen. all our former coaches go onto win super bowls just like herm did...... and technically being the head coach for a day doesn't count.
I think when you hire a guy that young you do it with the understanding that the first few years will have some bumps, some growing pains. It's not like he's Rich Kotite--look at his record and the records of the other guys who were fired and you tell me. What happened to stability? What about all the guys we brought in to play this system? And the good guys we let go because they didn't fit the system? Do we start over again with all these veterans signed for the next few years? All we need is a QB and we're ready to go. Mangini should have been given the final year of his contract and then go from there.
Excellent point. It's not like Eric's record here was bad. Yes, he had abysmal season last year, but note that he inherited 4-12 team also, not to mention all the injuries we had last year. And he led that team to play-offs a year before. Then he engineered 5 game improvement this year, compiling winning record. And even last 5 games we had a chance to win, if not for idiotic mistakes by Favre. We were in every game and if had someone who can throw the ball OK from QB position, we are 12-4 team. Perhaps 13-3 with a really good QB like Pennington was this year. I mean receivers were open, and that's all you can do as a coach in passing situations. Mangini can't get out there and through the ball to them. Instead Favre screws up, and we lose a good young coach, who finally gained some experience. Great. If we really were sucking badly every year, then I understand. But the guy in 3 years actually gave us 2 winning seasons, 5 game improvement over the team he inherited, a play-off appearance, and 2 Ws against mighty NE. All as a first time coach, and the youngest coach in the League. What a screw up by Woody.
Think about this--if Favre had never unretired we'd have very likely won the AFC East with Chad, kept Mangini and would be gearing up for a home playoff game this week. Thanks, Brett Favre!
Agreed. Unless they had Cowher "locked up" which they didnt -- there was no reason to make this move IMO. Mangini could have been better -- but the QB lost the games for him -- if they would have gotten anything out of him -- theyd be in the playoffs. Two of the picks (the TD and the last one) against Miami were just unforgiveable.
The first one was awful, too--1st and 10 at the 50, at least throw an incomplete pass. If he does get it to Leon there's one guy out there with him, it's probably a TD. After he missed a wide open LC on the first posession. Mangini didn't do that.
i HOPE Bellichick asks mangini to come back to NE and devote his entire life to destroying the JETS...and let him take ove NE when he is done
You know, what you just said right now makes me the most mad. We had the guy who has many years left in him and is rated #2 in NFL right now on our roster already, thanks to Parcells. He just needed some talent around him (6 pro bowlers will do the trick). Instead we are back to square one. And we didn't use our 6 overall pick either to find a QB in the draft. We put all our eggs in Favre basket, and now have a huge gap at the most important position on the field for years to come. Also, because of that imbecile Woody fired young talented coach. Favre experiment cost not only cost us play-offs this year, but has far longer implications of us not having top 2 passer in the League and a huge gap at QB, and also a good young coach, who finally got some experience. Also now looks like Woody is unwilling to get Cowher, because the guy who was really responsible for this mess (Tanny) would have to lose GM job in order for Cowher to come in. That's some serious short and long term implications of Favre experiment when coupled with Woody's stupidity.
Mangini, would be a great Fit in KC. They need to get more disciplined, and they are 25 mil under the cap, sorta where we were in 06.
Woody appears star-struck with Favre, who appears finished and more worried about his shoulder than what happens to the Jets. The biggest favor Favre can do us right now is to retire and stay retired. We have a decent team, any guy who doesn't give away 22 posessions over 16 games could probably get us to the playoffs.
