or perhaps he over achieved only to lose to better teams. last time I checked, Cower made 6 AFC championship games, and 3 of the 4 losses were to teams that not only won the Super Bowl but repeated as champions, hardly any indicator of him underachieving in the playoffs. what a shame, he got beat by John Elway and Bill Belichick 3 times, clearly he underachieved. clearly he underachieved and was what held Neil ODonnel and Kordell Stewart back from being the HOF QB's they should have been if he wasn't their coach. they were both clearly better once they left Pittsburgh and went on to lead their next teams to numerous Super Bowls.
Ah...the Cowher excuses come...but how many AFC championships would it take for him to lose before the Jets fire him? 0. Thats how many. 1 would be too much.
You're right...Mangini> Cowher..How could the entire NFL world be so blind...As a matter of fact, I bet every team that is looking for a new HC is knocking on mangini's door. I mean every time you turn on the news, they are all clambering on "Who will win the Mangini sweepstakes"
I don't mean this in a disparaging way, but I honestly think Mangini has got to be the first Jets' coach DWare ever experienced. There's no other way anybody can be so blindly loyal to the guy. I mean, I don't think Cowher is the end-all coach or that Mangini is the worst coach ever...but if asked to pick between the two? There shouldn't even be a moment of hesitation in who to take.
What makes Mangini one of the most talented head coaching candidates out there? Lets say he didn't have head coaching experience. His track record would be mainly a positional assistant with one year as a coordinator. That year, the Pats D did poorly. But one time, he called a blitz and Belichick went over to him and gave him a high five. That makes him qualified!
It's not any more unrealistic than him magically turning around the franchise. He's a name with a good track record who just retired now. He's a good coach who should be considered and would be great to hire. And the number one reason I believe that is that I don't think he wants to coach right now. It'd kick ass if I was wrong, but I don't see any reason for him to unretire.
I have finally digested all the info from today and it is really just the icing on the cake for this miserably run franchise. We hired Mangini 3 years ago with one year of DC experience and a few years as a defensive backs coach. I thought we hired him knowing we would need to give this guy time before he learned the ins and outs of coaching. Was I happy with what he showed for much of the time here, not at all. I would have liked to seen a quicker improvement when it comes to things like play calling, and game management. He stopped doing a lot of things he did well the first season when I was superbly happy with his performance. Still we had to know the guy would struggle and there is a reason why Belichick hates the guy for leaving and it's plain and simple he considered him a threat. Maybe he saw some of himself in Mangini and maybe like himself Mangini will go on and succeed after being fired from his first HC job. Regardless Mangini didn't perform so if you want to fire him maybe thats not that crazy. Heres where it becomes laughable. I actually heard discussions today that the Jets would hire a coach who would favor Favre. Favre will be here one more year (lets hope he calls it quits) and we are going to hire a coach based on that!!! We actually are considering different coaches if Favre comes back as opposed to if he doesn't??. I am stopping here hoping that this is not true and Woody realizes we can't change coaches ever two years. And can't let a 40 year old who could call it quits any day now make our coaching decision. Then as mentioned the coaching talent out there is slim. Cowher I guess would be a solid choice but he's very conservative and not a great coach by any means but a good one. On top of that we don't even know if he would come back this year as early signs point to no. Thats the best option a good coach who doesn't even want to coach this year. Other than that we have recycled talent that have failed just like mangini if not worse or unproven talent just like Mangini was coming in. Then I hear Mangini doesn't want Favre here and maybe didn't want him to begin with. Woody loves the idea of Favre because it sells tickets. What a joke. You know what sells tickets?? Winning!! I find it hard to believe Mangini didn't want Favre from the start (I mean he named his kid after him) but at least he was smart enough to realize he didn't want him coming back which the others in the organization apparently don't realize. Anyway like LookingForDware said just look at the press conference. Woody has no idea if he made the right decision he just sort of went with something. He porbably pick the new coach in the same way and 3 years from now we will be on the market again because this group has more of a chance of throwing together the next 08 lions rather than picking the right head coach.
The tickets are sold and will be sold whether favre is here or not, and whether they win or lose those tickets are already sold. Wanna try again?
The reason he got fired was because they didnt make the playoffs and let chad go who led the phins to an afc championship. I agree though that they did jump the gun, but thats business. We are probably getting either spagz or cower. So don't be too down...i don't think they will be fired for awhile if hired. especially cower
