I apologize ahead of time if another thread on this topic already exists ? I can?t always keep up with em all. I don?t know whether or not Favre will be back in 09 ? personally I hope not. I?ve always been a fan of the guy but I don?t think he has the abilities that he used to. I would love to see the Jets groom a young QB who could be our guy for the long term (We did have a good one in CP but the injuries were just a killer) rather than just bringing in another older dude who probably won?t stay for more than a couple of seasons. From what I?ve seen of Clemens, he probably isn?t the type of QB who can carry us to the next level. He seems pretty good but not great (In my humble opinion of course ? and that?s based on pretty limited PT so far). On the other hand, I haven?t seen Ratliff play at all and don?t know much about the guy. I didn?t get to see him in college and he hasn?t had any PT for us yet. It would be great if we already had a kid on the roster who could step up and make a case for being our QB of the future rather than having to bring in someone new. I know a lot of people bring up the idea of giving him a shot but I never hear anyone comment on his actual skills. Is there anyone out there with a good knowledge of this guy?s abilities who could shed some light on whether or not he?s a legit candidate for QB in 09? Strengths? Weaknesses? Thanks.
I'm really hoping the cards fall in such a way that Ratlif gets a shot at it. I loved what I saw from him in this pre-season.. and would love to see him take the reigns in the regular season. I think we've seen enough of Clemens, so its time to move on. As far as skills go.. its hard to say. In preseason he showed great poise in the pocket, a good arm and great decision making...
Ratliff impressed me in the preseason, preaseason means nothing of course, but I would like to see what he can do if given a chance. I certainly don't like what I have seen from Clemens.
I don't think any of us can make a respectable analysis on the guy, given that we've only seen a handful of his snaps in preseason. There certainly was an air of excitement when he was playing though.
Very true... I can offer this... Today Francesa had a guy on who asked about Ratliff, and Francesa said that he knows internally Jets coaches and GM have said they like the kid a lot, a lot more than Clemens.
It hard to judge him considering he has had ZERO playing time. Yipee he looked good in a couple of preseason games, not exactly a guarantee of future NFL success. No one on here knows anything about him other then what they saw in a couple of meaningless preseason games. This will be the next HCs most important decision and will determine how long it will take to become a contender again.
All I can say on this is I do not think we can get a true franchise QB in the draft next year unless that person is already on the team. I can't say that a QB is on our team who can ultimately get the job done, but Ratliff does deserve a thorough looking at. I just don't think Clemens has what it takes.
I guess that's promising to hear...unless they're just really down on Clemens, who unfortunately hasn't shown much himself. One thing I do like though, is that Ratliff always seemed to be around Favre and the coaches, constantly chatting them up. Hopefully, it means he's observant and willing to learn. My hope is that he caught a lot of the "good" stuff from Favre (reading defenses, looking off defenders, etc.) and is malleable enough to be taught by the coaching staff (i.e. mechanics, and don't toss up prayers like Favre).
with 7 pro bowlers it shouldn't be difficult to continue to do well. With someone who isn't going to reinvent the wheel but just fix the kinks this team can win 10+ games.... providing the Jets have a good QB.
Think we have enough talent on our D to dump the 3-4 without it affecting us greatly, but we would need help in the defensive backfield in terms of speed. If we are ever going to see VG emerge as a player he needs to be one of our defensive ends or use solely in pass rush packages.
