Wow, even though I knew this was coming since 8:30, I am still shocked. Wow, just wow. Woody is doing the right thing, but I am shocked.
I think this was more of a business decision by Woody than anything else. He couldn't possibly stand pat and needed to be seen as a "involved owner" instead of the hands off, Leon Hess type. Remember, from a marketing perspective, how can you sell $25K PSL's when your team has a awful albeit well deserved reputation as underachievers. The "SOJ's" may have inspired Woody to do this. Since its already been proven that with good leadership, teams can turn around quickly these days, I'm thinking Woody brings in a established coach with a resume. The days of OJT at the HC position are gone. Hopefully for good..
I think they'll bring him in for an interview under the Rooney rule. He was the first name that came to mind. Doesnt mean I think they'll hire him, though.
Maybe it was Mangini's parting gift, because they knew by the middle of the third that the Ravens were going to win, and it didn't matter what they did. Might as well keep daddy out of the playoffs.
Favre will certainly be gone also, whether or not he wants to "mull it over." WFAN just confirmed the firing. It's apparently official.
Have you looked into the track record of former failed Browns coaches coming to coach in the AFC-E? Hmmmm...
The right move IMO but now it's all about hiring the right guy. I do feel kinda bad for Mangini. While I believe he has to take the fall for this mess, there are so many players who also have blood on their hands (I'm looking at you Brett Favre!!).
Oh, bull. He got himself fired. He lost the lockerroom a long time ago. He made terrible coaching decisions, and he acted like a dick to several key players along the way. Woody is a fan, not just an owner, and I suspect he saw the same issues that most fans on the board here saw as well.
1010 WINS says Woody Johnson will announce the firing at the Press Conference, which is 15 minutes from now.
Brett Favre wasn't out-coached against the majority of one of the weakest schedules in the entire league. He sucked, yes, but he wasn't the ultimate reason why the team quit with a month left of the regular season. I mean... seriously... how does your team quit on you when you are in sole ownership of the division lead? After beating the Pats in Foxboro and the Titans in Tennessee? How does that happen???
