Will Bill Parcells become a free agent -- again?

    [+] EnlargeSteve Mitchell/US Presswire

Bill Parcells' contract with the Dolphins allows him to leave the team if owner Wayne Huizenga sells his majority share.
It's a possibility, hinging on whether Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga's sale of his majority ownership of the team goes through, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

When Parcells joined the Dolphins as executive vice president of football operations last year, his deal included a onetime out clause that would allow him to walk away, with the rest of his $12 million guaranteed contract fully paid, no strings attached, if Huizenga were to sell the team.

Earlier this year, Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the Dolphins to New York developer and team part-owner Stephen Ross. Huizenga hopes to close on the deal by early January to ensure that the capital gains taxes on the sale remain at 15 percent before President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office Jan. 20, Mortensen reported.

Parcells' contract specifically states only Huizenga can be in authority over him. Once Ross officially becomes majority owner, Parcells has to notify Ross within 30 days that he intends to exercise his walk-away clause and collect the full balance of $9 million, Mortensen reported.

At that time, Parcells would be a free agent. And any team that wants his services would not owe compensation to the Dolphins, according to the report.

Among the teams sources say are on Parcells' radar are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders. However, if Parcells' son-in-law, New England Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, is interested in any of those jobs, Parcells is unlikely to wind up with that team, Mortensen reported.

Parcells could negotiate with Ross to extend his opt-out clause by one year. But as presently written, the clause doesn't extend after one season, according to the report.

I know Jest fans sure would love for it to happen, but it's not. Leave it up to Dolphins biggest haters, ESPN, to try and start trouble as soon as the Phins do the unthinkable, and prove ESPN wrong on a daily basis.

Not to mention, Stephen Ross and Parcells, have conversed about the situation. Parcells seems to like Ross. Sorry, Jet fans, getting Parcells will remain a dream for y'all. Like I said, leave it to ESPN to try and start shit after the Dolphins put together an amazing season

Ahh, just realized it was the one and only Dolphin Hater Chris Mortenson :rofl2: Same Chris Mortenson to report that Ronnie Brown would be traded. It never gets old.

As team pres w/ Tannenbaum still picking players I'm ok w/ it, as long as BP doesn't get to pick players. he gets credit for putting Ireland and Sparano in place but ireland put that team together ands they lucked out w/ our stupidity getting Chad. Parcells already ruine our cap and ruined our future once.

    Think about this:

    -he cost us Belichick
    -gave us groh
    -ruind our cap

As a Coach? absolutely, as a Pres helping out Tannenbaum? Sure but not as a guy in charge of brining in players. Tannenbaum has done a good job(w/ the exception of Gholston and Favre) and I'm confident in him.

NYJunc hates Parcells only because he left us in so-called cap hell despite building us into a winner. Also hates BP because everyone knows, says and believes Herm took a BP built team to the playoffs 3 times. Cap hell is worth winning. Yeah he left Belichick in controls and he left because he hated ownership situation but BPs presence as GM is your given reason for his leaving. Funny how his son-in-law became BB's GM in NE once he defected. Why is Groh so bad? He lost his players exactly like Mangina did and had the same 9-7 record with way less talent; he only caught a raw deal and was a better HC than Herm was ever. BP is a freakin winner whether you like to admit it or not.

I love Parcells for turning the franchise around but I hate what he did to us as he left. He cost us Belichick, he put us in cap hell b/c of dumb moves as he was leaving like extending Mo and giving Cox a deal he knew we couldn't keep him w/ and knew we'd have to cut him taking a cap hit months later.

Of course he's a better HC than Herm, that's not debateable. As a HC he's one of the best of all-time, as a guy picking players he's mediocre.

Parcells should be respected after what he did over his career. Every team he's been on, he turned them around.

Parcells has an out in his contract if Wayne Huizenga sells the Fins to current co-owner Stephen Ross. ESPN reported Sunday that Parcells might jump to another team as GM, but the Star-Ledger says the Tuna would also be interested in coaching the talent he evaluates. Any team pursuing Parcells would obviously have to realize he's a short-term solution. If Parcells does return to the sidelines, the Jets would appear to be his best fit. Dec. 29 - 2:51 pm et

Mort has twisted his words to make it sound like Parcells is actively searching for another team to save. Yeah, ok. Sorry guys, but the only team currently on Parcells radar, are the Miami Dolphins. He's not going anywhere...:)

Parcells is not going to coach another team. He's going to stick with front office duties.

Why would anyone want to go back to Parcells? Bill Parcells will sign a deal and have a set number of years he has predetermined or an angle within his contract. He leaves you a fast as you can say "why". No Thanks lets go in another direction then the Bill,Bill,AL, Mangini, and their come-a-longs.

Thank you. I'm so sick of all this Parcells and Co. talk. Sure, maybe he could waltz in, build a winning team and then skate, but so what? He doesn't give a fuck about the Jets and if he came here again it certainly wouldn't be for very long. I hope the front office has a little more creativity than that. We need a foundation, not a band-aid.
