Regarding the ?Brett?s too old? crock: Last year Brett threw for 4,155 yards, 28 TD?s, had a final passer rating of 95.7 % and led his team to a 13 and 3 record. If it had not been for Brady?s magical season; Brett would have had his fourth MVP. Brett didn?t age overnight. Regarding the ?Brett verses Penny? arguments: What does it tell you when your last QB that couldn?t perform here is easily making it with Miami while your new QB who performed no problem with the Packers is also having a tough time adjusting to The Jets. Do you really think it is just coincidence that both these QB?s can shine in other places but not here? I personally don?t know what the answer is but for those of you now screaming for your next QB; you are in la la land if you think that is the problem and will be in for a rude surprise no matter who you get, if things don?t change outside of the QB position. Regarding the ?Unrealistic Expectations? that some of you have: The Jets were 4-12 last year and have already improved to a 9-6 winning record this year. As much as I would like to see a SB too, it usually takes more than 1 year to turn a 4-12 team to a SB contender. So for those crying for a Mangini and Brett?s head already, you are really missing out on what we have to work with for a potential run next year. Bottom line: Stop crying over being a winning team again. You keep these guys together for one more year, work out the kinks and you will have one hell of a team, but for those ?quick gratification folks? that can?t see the improvement / light at the end of the tunnel, lets pray you don?t get your ?fire Mangini, get rid of Brett? wishes because you will have had your window of opportunity and blown it !!
I think Favre may well be injured - how seriously will determine whether or not he returns next year. If he isn't injured then his recent decline is alarming.
This, to me, is the best argument for not getting on Favre's case. Yes, he's looked like shit lately but I believe that's more a product of the coaching staff not utilizing him. If he's lost some of his game, the coaches need to adjust to that and they clearly haven't.
He desreves some of the bashing... Im not a Favre fan, nor was i one of the 10,000 people on here who felt the superbowl was a lock when we acquired the aging qb who didnt want to come here.. i agree its now turnmed a little to far in the other direction.. Everyone is off the favre bandwagon here, and acting as if hes the worst thing has ever happened to the franchise.. lol Hes been ok, the play calling sucks. This season collapse goes on the coaches not favre.. hes doing what he can. He may be hurt.. They just dont use him properly
The bottom line is that big time players come up big at the stretch run of the season. No one on this team has come up smaller than Favre. It was unrealistic to expect him to bring a Super Bowl here, but he has been absolutely awful the last 4 weeks.
When you are 10-6 2 years ago, in your coach's rookie year, you expect to be able to make a run at the SB 2 years later, especially after bringing in $140 million worth of free agents, and Brett Favre. After an 8-3 start, not making and WINNING in the playoffs is a failure.
Are you seriously suggesting that Favre hasn't played poorly the last four weeks? Funny how he was doing much better for the first 11 games with the same coaches, but now it's all the coaching staff. I couldn't care less what he did last year - anyone who can't see that he has been a large part of the problem the last four weeks simply isn't interested in seeing the truth. It might be that he's hurt, but that doesn't mean that his play hasn't been poor. It's a lot more likely that a 39-year-old gets hurt and doesn't recover so quickly (or perhaps at all), so yes, he certainly can "age overnight."
Quarterback rating can get so skewed. I don't hold it to be the end all evaluator. More times than not we put together a good drive and run the ball in. No TD pass for the stats. Remember the year Manning had 49 TD. Over 15 of them were from the 1 yard variety. Up until last game, we were scoring points, but we weren't finishing. Obviously INT's kill the rating and not getting TD passes only worsens it. Our offense has been sputtering and lot of that falls on Favre, but though his stats say 1 TD pass in the last four games, the JETS have scored 8. 1 defense TD from Ellis. Jones has 4 TD, with two of them from goal to goal. Favre ran one in from the 2. Washington busted a 47 yard run vs Buffalo. And the lone TD pass for 11 yards to Cotchery. And then there's the issue of critical drops in all these games. Keller in SF and Den. Coles in nearly every game, at least two vs Seattle. Cotchery vs Den, twice, both were potential TD's Bubba Franks last week. That was a huge drop early in the 4th Q. when the score was 10-3. not even sure why Franks is even playing, but that's another discussion for another time.
what would you like them to do??? they have run the quick slants 3 step drop offense so much that teams now have come up and made a better effort to stop it, is it the coaching staffs fault Favre cant make them pay by throwing deep?? I havent seen a guy with a worse deep ball then Favre
We have every right to bash Brett Favre. With our season on the line, we scored 3 points against a bad Seattle defense. And we couldn't hack it against SF two weeks ago, nor against Denver the week before that. And we've been able to run the ball fairly well in all those games.
Funny, I'm tired of the ignorant Favre defending. As bad as the playcalling has been at time this year I doubt the plays are drawn up as "over/underthrow your WR by 20 yards" or "throw across your body and the field into triple coverage". I don't buy the injury excuse this year either, Favre has stunk 3 out of the last 4 years, the only exception being last season. I just hope he actually retires this time so the Jets don't waste another year on this redneck pill popping piece of shit.
And please stop with this injury excuses- the Jets got to within a FG of the AFC championship in 2004 with a QB with a torn rotator cuff. I think its pathetic that Favre is already making excuses.
Amazing how people accept the Favre injuries but not the Chad ones, isn't it? And who cares what Favre did last year, he also blew the game against the Giants and cost his team a trip to the superbowl. All of these excuses about the coaching staff this year, but last year it was all Chad's fault, and that was without an O line! Nothing but a bunch of double standards here, try talking out of one side of your mouths for a change!
Dude, he's not playing well, but that post was also stupid. You didn't have to personally attack an addiction that he got over like 13 years ago. Go vent about that in a personal journal 'cause no one thinks that's entertaining. Also, I think a lot of this stuff would come off of Favre's shoulders if the people around him were progressing. Mangini's decision making is as much to blame for not having a shot at a win in the 4th quarter over the past month. The OP was well written, but I tend to agree with RobA. You can't go back to '07 and say wow, we've doubled our wins. Because we WERE 8-3 with one of the best records in the league. You can't really say it was because of an easy schedule because we won some real tough ones and lost the "easy" ones. The players haven't played well sometimes, but to me the above fact points towards coaching. We sure could've used some Herm motivation. Or a boxing tape.
Are you really coming on here trying to make a case that Favre hasn't been absolutely dreadful this year? News flash for you, he has been dreadful this year and is the single biggest factor in the Jets collapse this year, followed closely by the disappearance of Jenkins and the coaching. Another benefit to Favres impending retirement is these Packer fans could go back to being Packers fans and leave us real Jets fans to our misery.
