Link? That sounds preposterous. I'm all for a Salary Floor and Salary Cap, but being mandated by legislation? Fuck that shit.

Varitek can go fuck himself. They need to cut ties with him ASAP and trade for Saltalamaccia.

You, sir, have your head in the sand. They may be decent this year IF Lowell and Ortiz are healthy (which I don't have much faith in), but within the next 2-3 years they are in big trouble, barring trades.

They are in big trouble? Pedroia, Daisuke ,Becket, Lester, Papelbon, Youkilis, Bay, and Ellsbury are all under 30. Lars Anderson is a only a year or two away, and we've already seen flashes of brilliance from Masterson. There's a long list of teams that would love to be in the "trouble" Boston will find itself in 2010.

As for Lowell and Ortiz, yes they are areas of concern. However, I would be shocked if the Sox didn't go out and add some depth at a corner position. They have a very deep farm system, and I have no doubt that they will use it to make trades to improve the big league roster over the next few years. It's not even 2009 yet, and you're talking like the roster we have right now is what we will have opening day.

As for Salty, I'm not convinced he's the answer. His defense is very shaky and his bat hasn't shown to be exceptional in the major leagues either.

Not sure that is even possible. Last I heard baseball still has an antitrust excemption which I believe also means congress can't ever do shit to them. That's the kind of congressmen that run this country, they don't even know the laws. Aren't we in great hands? I would love to know where they are from.

Anderson may end up being nothing. Who knows. I like him as a prospect, but counting on him to step in in a couple years as your main plan is stupid. For all we know he'll never be able to hit Major League pitching.

Ortiz is the only real power bat this team has, and who knows how he'll be this year. Even before the wrist injury he was showing a fair amount of decline, especially bat speed wise. He's a huge question mark, and there is no other real power threat in the lineup. It's turned into all the OBP role player guys. They're fine to fill out the order, but when you have them hitting 4-6 and then a black hole 7-9, your lineup is in trouble.

Congress can take away the exemption at any time, which is why baseball was willing to allow the whole steroid thing to happen without too much of a fight.

The Yankees of the late 90's weren't power packed...Plus Bay, Drew, Pedroia, Youkilis, and Lowell all have skills that age will and their power isn't exactly non-existent.

Hell, if Ortiz can repeat last seasons numbers...their offense should be fine...especially if Buchholz gets his shit together and Beckett goes back to pitching like he can pitch.

I definitely agree that they need long term power.

They have tried to do that before. Only in theory can they do that. There has never been any support to take it away and certainly the Yankees spending money wouldn't be a reason either. On top of that, certainly no card carrying democrat would ever propose the union busting effect that would have.

Devil, Burnett will produce about the same as Pettitte?

Are we talking about 08 Pettitte? I hope not. If he goes 14-14 it will be an utter disappointment. If you are talking about 33 starts and 204 innings, I'll take that. However, hopefully this year the offense wakes up and puts guys starting games in positions to get wins, I'd say win totals +4 per pitcher, except Wang + 12.

agreed Mangold. I fully suspect Burnett to wayyyy out-produce Pettitte. As does everyone in the yankees org.

bedard is arbitration eligible and only made what $7 million last year and pitch terrible and coming off an injury.

matsui make $13 million and had september knee surgery.
