Well, in the ongoing saga we have this. "Far from out of the running for Mark Teixeira, the Red Sox are believed to have raised their bid right to their final number on their trip Thursday to visit with Teixeira. While that Boston bid isn't known, baseball people believe the Red Sox were intending to stop bidding at about $180 million over eight years, perhaps a little bit more than that, maybe as much as $184 million. Their offer, whether it was $180 million or slightly more than that, is believed to still be on the table. The Red Sox's honchos likely were hopeful to bring Teixeira back to Boston when they embarked on their trip to Dallas. And while they may feel slightly less positive about their chances, they are still considered alive, along with the Nationals, Angels, Yankees and Orioles. Boston people, who didn't respond today to emails, surely were also disappointed to hear they don't have the high bid. But their strategy is a very disciplined one. They say they will not go beyond their targeted number, and apparently they are at that number now." First it's on the table, then it's off, then it's on, then it's the last. The writers are definitely providing comic relief at least. http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/h...red-sox-not-done-for-teixeira-yet?eref=fromSI
You have to look at this from Washington's perspective, they just moved into a new stadium. You have no fanbase and you have to compete with the Phillies and Mets in your division and the Orioles in your TV market. Lets be honest by signing Tex they get a guy to help bring fans in the seats. They won't compete with the Mets or Phils but you do maybe get some people who are on the fence to watch the Nats as opposed to the Orioles. They also would convert me to a Nationals fan because of my idiotic comment in another thread..... god I hope he doesn't go to the Nationals. I made in thinking there was no way he'd go to Washington and now it's a very real possibility.
It certainly makes sense for Washington to pay him 25 million a year if they sell 35 million more worth of tickets and get a better TV deal and other endorsements as well. Not to mention how much Teixiera may make in endorsements there himself. Who is the competition for that base? Nobody. He has a ton of competition in Boston or NY or LA.
And now Heyman says the Yankees are indeed back in the Teixiera soap opera race although it might be only to tweak Boston a little more. I guess Henry has himself to thank for them getting back in. They weren't until he said Boston was out. "A day after Red Sox owner John Henry strongly suggested that he’d hit his limit with his latest bid for free-agent star first baseman Mark Teixeira, Teixiera’s agent Scott Boras was back in dialogue with the Yankees and Angels, people familiar with the talks told SI.com. Boras was believed to be looking for offers of at least $180-million, or perhaps more, from at least a couple of the other interested teams after talks with Boston stalled. It’s believed the Red Sox were bidding close to $180 million before Henry publicly suggested that he was done bidding. While Henry and the Red Sox have not pulled their offer and are said by those in the know to remain in contention, the other contenders are getting another chance now to move to the top of the pack. Yankees people were thought on Friday to be debating the merits of Teixeira vs. Manny Ramirez, Boras’ other available slugging superstar, and there may be a split vote in the pinstripe hierarchy. While they all love Teixiera’s all-around play and character, Ramirez may be favored by some for his unmatched clutch hitting prowess, unique ability to tweak the rival Red Sox and to draw attention and dollars, but especially because he’d require a shorter term (perhaps three or four years as opposed to at least eight for Teixeira)." http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/h...back-in-talks-with-yankees-angels?eref=fromSI And Rosenthal says Pettitte coming back is inevitable. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8966744/Source:-Pettitte-to-Yanks-'virtually-inevitable'
now this may make me sound like an asshole but either way, bringing in Tex will make the Nats substaintially better, giving protection in the form of a gold glove power hitter in his prime to zimmerman thier 3rd baseman star in the making will go a long way to makin them better, now im not saying they will contend, but a couple more pieces and i could see them make marked improvements. The rays sucked too you know
Are Yankees fans not loyal or something? Sure Pettitte had a down year last year, but I am really excited if we can get him back. Especially as the #5. Are you kidding me? This is sweet!
I don't mind Pettitte, but Teixeira is turning out to be a puke. Revealing his decision on Christmas? Tacky as shit.
He said that? Well, during Christmas you want to be with family. Most of his is in the Baltimore area. hmy: O's or Nats?
I'm hearing a lot of attacks Teixeira and they don't make much sense. Why is it his fault that he is trying to get as much money as any team is willing to pay him? Sure, where you play is important to the game, but people highly underestimate the effect the high-turnover rate has on players. These guys are people who happen to be baseball players, not the other way around. And if Teixeira wants to be near his family and make 20 million more in Washington, I'm sure he can convince himself that he is just gaining the opportunity to be the face of a team on the rise. Or something like that. The point is, baseball players will know people no matter where they go. All cities being equal, they will go to the highest bidder. And so would everyone else on this board if they were in the same position.* *Only if the money is significant obviously. If he signs with the Nats for 8/180 and reports come out that the Sox or Yankees were offering 8-175, then that would be absurd.
The issue most of us Sox fans have, however, is that he specifically stated that winning was priority #1. He will never win in Washington. He will never win in Baltimore. He will win in Boston and New York, however. If in the end he signs with say, the Skanks, I'd at least respect that. He gets the absurd paycheck he desires and he has the chance to win that was "oh so important" to him. But if he goes to the Nats, he'll be mired in baseball obscurity forever.
For the amount of money the Yankees could pay him as well as the good chances he'll have at a title, I'm sure he wouldn't mind shipping his entire family to NYC.
You just have to bet that is Boras and not Teixiera making that decision if that is what he does. Last year he upstaged the world series and this year he want to upstage Jesus Christ.
^ Don it's called representation. When you have someone else speak or act on your behalf, what they do essentially is what you do.
Still has no legiitmate business purpose behind it. Unless scorched earth is a business purpose. And it may well be. Who am I to say?
Well, he didn't have the seven year deal he was seeking. The Red Sox, for their part, doubted that one extra year would be there. They were wrong, but the success they've had since then is hard to debate.
Do you think Heyman even bothers writing his own stuff anymore, or does he just let Boras email his next installment to SI?
