And maybe he just doesn't care about winning and losing. It's 10 years, big deal. He will be close to home (maybe) and that is all he wants. Screw winning, just give me my 20+ million a year. How many of these people do you really think care at all? Ever notice all the Yankees last year smiling and joking around the last couple of games as they were getting eliminated? With a few exceptions, the only people who really care are the fans.

I think Cappy is right, these guys don't care about truly winning, they will take the money over the win.

Now this is good for the Yankees if he chooses money over Boston, but I have to say, it's shitty to do. He deserves to lose if he goes to the Nats or Os.

WTF is the difference? He lost with Texas, he lost with Atlanta and he lost with LA. He is well versed in it and now somebody is willing to pay him big bucks to do it too. Why does anybody think he cares?

To put it in perspective, if you made 200 grand a year in your job it would take you 1000 years to earn what he will in 10. Who gives a fuck...really.

I watched the History channel show on the gladiators last night. Now those guys were athletes. They trained 14 hours a day, 7 days a week and always put everything on the line. When they won they got paid well and since most were slaves they could even win their freedom. In many cases when they lost they got their throats slit or fed to the lions. They are probably the only athletes who ever really cared about winning.

The fact that he said hjimself he wanted to win really irks me.

unless he goes to ny or la, he is going to arod the Nats.cripple them financially so they are forced to trade is overpaid ass. He wont put up the numbers he could have put up in boston, he wont win. But at least his momma can sit in her skybox and watch her little trooper shag balls while getting his face beat down by the rockies and padres.

Yes, chances are it will be. All reports prior to this indicated that the Sox were in love with this guy and planned on going after him aggressively. The Sox are also reported to have offered a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of 8/180. If that is so far off from the better offers from other teams, then I'd assume he will likely get at least 200 million. That is WAY too much to be offering when the financial world is on the verge of tanking to a 28 year old with a career OPS + of 134

    Let the rationalizing begin!

$200 million = irresponsible in this economy.
    $180 million = A-OK

If it were the Sox signing him for $200 million, I can guarantee there would be no talk about the struggles of the financial sector in the posts of Red Sox fans.

As much as I am happy about this development from a Yankees fan perspective, this is bad for the sport, and really drops my opinion of him.

This isnt bad for the sport. So unless every free agent goes to the Yankees or Sox they dont want to win? This whole nonsense about the Yankee Sox rivalry is so overblown its ridiculous. Isnt it better for the sport if the star players get dispersed throughout the league? There is baseball beyond Yankees/Sox guys. Im pretty sure the current champs would agree

So you are saying that a difference of 20 million dollars is essentially negligible? 180 million should what Teix's value is stretched with Boras' help. 200 million dollars is too much for an elite hitting first baseman but not once-in-a-generation type guy. Especially in this economy. A team has to have its limits, you can't just go crazy every time and say "Fuck it, it's only an extra 20 million dollars".

Teix should be somewhere in the 150-160 million range, 180 million is overpaying but could be defended. 200 is too much. If the Sox turn around and sign him for 200 million over X years (they won't) I will come on here and tell everyone that they overpaid badly.

I'm wondering if this could be Henry simply letting Boras that they have drawn a line in the sand, and they won't cross it. Period. I'm also skeptical that any team really has offered Teix more or if this is another case such as when Damon supposedly had a 7 year deal. If anyone's really offering significantly more than the Sox it's the Yankees.

150 million is overpaying too. I mean, these guys play baseball..it isn't like there is any danger in it or that it requires any real athleticism..it's baseball.

I'm so sick of hearing about the economy when talking about baseball. It really doesn't matter. The owners of the MLB teams know what they have monetarily, and they know what they can afford to spend. Yes, the economy is bad, but that really has little to do with this. If the owners are hurting they won't offer as much.

That said, the Red Sox have shown a history of setting a max value for players and sticking to it. If someone else wants to go above that, the Sox aren't going to raise their offer to match someone else if they don't think it's worth it. That's usually a very good strategy, and is a big reason the Sox have been good lately, but personally I think they need to learn when to make the occasional exception, and Teixeira is one of those.

This is the dumbest shit you've said. Why? Because he earned the opportunity to have stupid front offices overpay for him? Maybe he plans on being a philanthopist and putting money into charities in the future and wants all he money he can get now to do that...how the hell do you know or I know his motivation for accepting a higher offer? In most scenarios, you never take the lesser offer, it's business, especially now when everyone is going broke and getting fired, he secures his life for 10 years and finances forever. He deserves to lose...unreal, just stupid shit to say.

I just find the whole thing humorous, that's all. That the line where the level of overpayment goes from acceptable to unacceptable is at the dollar amount that Henry & Co. have offered Teixeira. Never heard a peep about Sox fans not wanting to overpay for him until it was reported that they might not get him. Never heard complaints about irresponsible behavior in the economy until then, either.

Yes, you want to get good value in your contracts. But you also want to field a winning team. The two are related, but it's not a 1:1 correlation if you have the financial flexibility to adjust. The Red Sox have this flexibility, and they would be fools not to use it in this case.

It's stupid to say that he deserves to lose if he goes to a team with no plans whatsoever of competing, who would rather simply overpay one guy to bring fans into the seats than put a quality product on the field?

Yes, it's clearly stupid when it's worked so many times in the past. You know, like Alex Rodriguez in Texas. Oh. Wait.

If these teams were even remotely serious about competing I wouldn't have wrote what I did. But they're not. The Nationals even publicly said as much. They're solely interested in bringing in a "big name" to get fans into the seats.

It's hard to turn down lots of money, sure, but don't bullshit the entire world with the whole "My first concern is going somewhere to win a championship" and then sign with the Nationals or Orioles for the most money. Say, "Look, I want to go where someone is going to pay me." I can respect that.

Sports teams are no angels in the dealings with personnel either. I say F the man, take the money.

Basically Teixeira looks at playing baseball AS A JOB. Winning is nice but it's not priority. At my job, I want to get paid, I don't care about the betterment of the "team" or "winning" I want to be compensated for how well I do. And believe me, money motivates me, I outperform anyone around me 2 fold.

That's wonderful. I also said there's nothing wrong with pursuing the biggest contract. My issue is that he specifically maintained that the most important thing to him was to win a championship. Going to the Os or Nats specifically states otherwise.

I don't give a shit if he winds up with the Nationals. That's his business. But I don't want to hear his bullshit that he's interested in winning, because that decision clearly says "Honestly, no I'm not, I'm looking to get paid bitches!"

I understand Alio, but "The most important thing to me is winning a Championship" is a lot different then "The only thing on my agenda is winning a Championship" or "I will only go to a team I deem a Championship contender". The first has some ambiguity to it. Winning a Championship may be the most important but not the most likely to happen. Maybe he doesn't want to play in the AL East with 3 competitive teams and 1 spot to go around.

But YES! I agree with you, call a spade a fucking spade. I'm tired of these athletes beating around the bush especially the Jets in interviews or press conferences. Give us something.

PS - I heard CC on the FAN yesterday. Very charming, assured everyone the opt-out clause was put in the contract for any team. Says he is 100% going forward with NYY.

Edit: I also said in a former post, Boston saw the offers were going into the 10 200 range. Good for them not buying into that. It's absurd for Teix, and it's a shame some team will put him in that category.

See? So maybe rather than jump on my back for a comment you ask me to clarify if you think I've said something wrong?

Hell, if you really want to know how I feel, I've said it previously. If he's not going to sign with the Yankees I hope he signs with the Nationals! That keeps him away from the Sox, and any other team we might have to worry about.

I'm not all about guys taking less money "on principle." Shit, I don't do it. But I also won't sit around saying that being "happy at work" or "having the opportunity to be more" are my motivation. I'm looking to get paid, and I will say that proudly. I'd have far more respect for Teixiera if he said the same thing because it's honest. I'd also respect for saying what he said if he was willing to take a few million less to play for a sure contender, such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, or Phillies. All East Coast teams (which he supposedly values as well,) and all (at least on paper) are surefire contenders in 2009.

Saying you want to win and having Boras as your agent are mutually exclusive. Everyone knows he will send you to the team with the highest offer. If he really cares he should just walk away from him like Arod did last year and make his own deal. Wherever he ends up will probably be where Boras wants him.

I haven't heard the one potentially obvious thing from anybody. Maybe he just doesn't want to play for the Red Sox. He grew up loving the Orioles. Maybe he hates the Sox and the Yankees too and wouldn't play for either no matter what the money is.

Oh, and ESPN quoted him as saying he will make a decision by Christmas day so don't expect this to be quick. That was probably the day Boras picked.
