Jesus people. We need to focus our attention to this weekend. Our playoffs start this weekend and some of you are already hoping we lose this Sunday? Man...Jets fans fucking suck. I have thought about Cowher as the Jets HC. The thing that I think made me believe that he'd be a good HC for us was because he would bring that Steelers defensive mentality and smash-mouth football. Then I thought about it some more and I realized that that kind of mentality only comes with two words attached to it. "Pittsburgh" and "Steelers" and only wears the colors gold and black on their uniforms. It's the attitude that's instilled into every player that ever wore that uniform that makes them play hard every down and it's what makes their fans proud to go out and represent them where ever they may go around the league or on their field. I wish WE had that same mentality, even tho we've shown flashes of it on D this year, but c'mon...taking Cowher out of Pittsburgh and thinking he's gonna bring the next Green Steel Curtain and win us a Super Bowl is a pretty far reach. He still had a DC and an OC that called those plays all those 15 years of success and in their Super Bowl run. The answer to our problems is right in front of us and to the left and right of Mangini. If anybody think that replacing Sutton with Dick Lebeau, or Jimmy Johnson, or Rex Ryan will show drastic improvement, then I'd have to question their football knowledge, or, this team just has absolutely no hope whatsoever.
With Cowher here we would have a better D hands down. Our front 7 would be more athletic by Bill's standards and fierce. Our pass rush leaves a whole lot to desire. He would have an automatic impact for sure. We already run a rush oriented offense we just need our "bruiser" to share carries with a change of pace back.
I am very far away from talking coaching change at this point. The only thing is the 2 recent losses just look plain awful on the resume given the position we had gotten ourselves to. It aint over yet. Lets see what comes out on the field this weekend and take it from there. The real problem is we have lost our identity that we had established; that is a tough thing to get back. That is the main reason for the worry.
Funny, I've been talking about the possibility of Cowher as DC for a short while and now this pops up. I must be psychic.
If we do miss the playoffs and mangini's fired i would love to have cowher. Guy has some fuckin cojones and could make us a tough organization for once. Doubt it happens but would be nice.
as DC? for mangini? for anyone? he is a head coach no way he leaves his nice broadcasting job to be a coordinator.
And he was a DC before that. Coaches have taken demotions before. If he really wanted to get back into the game with a specific team, he would take the demotion with the understanding that he's next in line. It isn't too ridiculous of an idea. Mangini tried to replace Sutton hard last offseason, and if we lose in the first round of the playoffs, Mangini might not be fired but he sure as hell will be on thin ice. We need a new DC, and bringing in Cowher would send a strong message to Mangini that is "win or you're going home". Cowher might accept a one year contract as DC with the understanding that he could see the HC job the next year if Mangini doesn't get the team to produce.
Coaches take demotions, most times, when they have been fired from a HC position. When was the last time you saw a coach win a Super Bowl and then take a demotion? His last game got him a ring.
I hope Mangini knows that most fans are OK with him. If he was reading this board he might think otherwise this week. But if he came back next week after winning, he'd see a bunch of people nursing off his hang-low. There're 3 games left in the season, and the playoffs are almost certain, and people are already focusing on a new coach next year. Who the hell would want to coach for a fan base that nutty?
coaches take demotions because they want to coach, and/or need a job. cowher may want to coach really bad, but he can get a head coaching job whenever he feels like it. all he has to do is wait for the right team to be looking for a coach. in the meantime he has a pretty sweet job so its not like he is sitting on his ass doing nothing, and i would guess he is making a decent amount of money.(not that he would be coming back for money, im sure he is set.)
Not that I don't think he's a good coach...but really what in the fuck is so special about Bill Cowher? It took the dude 14 years to win a SB, and that is one of the most controversial SB's in recent memory...or it would/should be if people cared about the SB beyond the one day a year it's on. Seriously, is Cowher the guy everyone here wants because he's the biggest name? What do you guys hope he'll do...change everything by just showing up and being Bill Cowher and bringing some bullshit ideals our young coach apparently doesn't have after 2 losses (nice run on)? Jets fans are fuckin...something else... I'll be the first to say it: Fuck Bill Cowher. Fuck his chin. Fuck the ZOMG LOOK HOW ANGRY HE LOOKS bullshit that got old in like 30 seconds but lasted 15 years anyway. No offense to him or anything. This shit is just stupid. It's stupid and fucking annoying.
Look at his win percentage. He had teams that were superbowl contenders almost every year. What did he have 4 AFC Championship games?
Not for nothing, but having a coach that had three losing seasons in 15 years would be a GOOD thing. Just pointing that out.
Here's is what is so special about Bill Cowher: He coached the Steelers for 15 seasons. The Steelers made the playoffs in 10 of those seasons. They won the division title 8 times. Bill Cowher's overall coaching record was 149-90. Bill Cowher's record in the playoffs was 12-9. Also, there was unlimited free agency during many of the years when Cowher coached. There weren't the salary cap restrictions that are designed to create parity that we now have in the NFL, but the Steelers were never big players in free agency (like the Cowboys, who "bought" the Super Bowl for a few years in the 1990s). Also, Bill Cowher took the helm of a team that had missed the playoffs six time out of the seven years. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers had the best record of any team in the National Football League since Cowher was hired as head coach. Hope that answers your question.
I'm not ready to see a coaching change. As much as I've criticised this team this season we're not that bad. We're probably 3-4 positions away from being a truly competitive team and firing the head coach and starting over would set us back even further. Just wait it out, let the coordinators get shifted out, and give Mangini and Tannenbaum one or two more years to put this team together. I'm tired of watching rebuilding years every 3-5 seasons.
