I have to say this is true. But, I also have to admit I was really pissed they beat the Chiefs last year. I knew it would cause them to draft Gholston the bust in lieu of a real football player.
it would be disappointing thats for sure, but being a winning team every year and not winning a superbowl would be better than being a winning team every other year and not winning a superbowl. i also like the odds of getting a superbowl a lot better if you are making the playoffs each year.
I can't argue against that, but I question some of the decisions Cowher made with his offense during his tenure that probably kept him from earlier Super Bowl victories.
During the Chiefs game I rooted wholeheartedly for the Jets to win. Afterwards I pondered the negative effects of the win. But during the game you have to root to win. Even if Cowher were guaranteed to came here if we didn't make the playoffs I would still root for them to win the games. Otherwise what is the point; you're forever trying to grasp for something in the furture that may never come to be.
Yea i agree with you, but i think cowher will bring that spark and energy we are currently lacking from our CS (Minus Westoff - anyone see him flippin out on in San Fran  ). We need a coach that actually coaches during a game and gets fired up rather then yelling into his headset and chewing his gum!
Generally, you can't make it to the Super Bowl often within short timespans. Have there been teams that have done it. Sure. The hasbins just to our north have, Buff has back in the OJ era, Pittsburgh under Bradshaw/Swann/Knoll, 49's, Dallas - the list starts shortening fast after that. If the Jets get to a Super Bowl, I will consider it a huge step in the right direction. We haven't been to the AFC Championship for 10 years; that's 10 unbelievably long grueling years; I have aged considerably in that time. I actually like Cowher's tactic; get to the door enough times and sooner or later it has to open and let you through because you made it happen. We seem to have a difficult time even making it to the door.
It's like rooting for the Jets to lose so we would have gotten Darren McFadden in the draft. It is just ridiculous.
Dont get me wrong! We need to make the playoffs and i am very optimistic these players will pull it together to do so. I would never rout against my own team (stayed to the very end against KC - even though it was a meaningless game last year) I want Mangini to succeed but i just get so angry with his lack of passion out there sometimes, and it seems to be trickling down to the players.
So it takes a long time to win a Super Bowl in many cases, and you think that Cowher did well by the 15th year of his career... but it's do or die time for Mangini at year 3? I don't get that logic.
Yeah i agree 100% with you. if Mangini makes the playoffs this year, that's two times in his three years here.
Did they report that they heard it would happen, or say they could see it as a possibility? huge difference. I seriously doubt that the jets brass are considering Mangini's replacement at this point.....and if they arem I doubt that woudl already have someone nailed down or even be talkign about it enough that someone could overhear and leak it.....
Cowher brought his team to the playoffs with O'Donnell, Tomczak, Stewart, and rookie Roethlisberger. The stats don't lie. He was a very consistent coach. 2006 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers 8 8 0 Cowher, Roethlisberger 2005 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 11 5 0 Cowher, Roethlisberger 2004 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 15 1 0 Cowher, Roethlisberger 2003 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers 6 10 0 Cowher, Maddox 2002 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 10 5 1 Cowher, Maddox 2001 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 13 3 0 Cowher, Stewart 2000 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers 9 7 0 Cowher, Stewart 1999 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers 6 10 0 Cowher, Tomczak 1998 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers 7 9 0 Cowher, Stewart 1997 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 11 5 0 Cowher, Stewart 1996 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 10 6 0 Cowher, Tomczak 1995 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 11 5 0 Cowher, O'Donnell 1994 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 12 4 0 Cowher, O'Donnell 1993 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 9 7 0 Cowher, O'Donnell 1992 NFL Pittsburgh Steelers* 11 5 0 Cowher, O'Donnell
My point really was not the it took Cowher 15 years; that's the way it worked out. You know as well as I do if the ball bounced a little different or if there were a couple of key penalties not called Cowher could have gotten there sooner. My point is that under Cowher, in general, a good football team took the field every year.
Byz, I do not think it is do or die time for Mangini. I will say that given the acquisitions of talent and big money spent we should make the playoffs, especially given that we actually made it to 8-3.
I want a coach for the long haul. If Cowher came in he'd probably only be around for 4 years at most. Mangini has the potential to be our coach for the next 15 years, but I'll have a lot of suspicions about that if we miss the playoffs this year, and would want to see a change.
