Is there any cap guru on this board? How is our cap situation? I've seen some of the cap figures for next year, and it had us over 8.5 mil - but then I couldn't quite tell whether that source was credible or not. As it stands (http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/numbers.asp) we're over about 2 mil this season. I'm getting a little bit worried - we can't afford to cut anyone of significance, so if that 8.5 mil over figure happens to be right, who do we cut?
Favre costs 12 Mill. And he is not back for next year right now, so he's a problem. There are others that will be cut to free Cap space, and there will be new draftees to sign that will make that number go down.. When the cap increases at the end of this year, it will also help.
Without Going into detail, we probably extend some contracts. Leon Washington comes to mind first. We spent a lot this year, so next year might be a slow year.
From just a quick scan of Rotoworld... Fanecas cap number jumps $6 million bucks to $7 mill. D. Woody jumps $5 millions more bucks. Baker, Ellis, Barrett, Bowens, K. Coleman, Coles all jump by a million. We've got some essential FA who need to be resigned and we have draftees to sign and holes to fill in FA. Suffice, the 2009 New York Football Jets will look a bit different than the 2008 version.
Not knowing the numbers I doubt we have any salary cap issues. Tannenbaum knows what he is doing and this team was not built through free agency. As long as we continue to draft well we shouldn't have cap issues.
I think the NFL gets an extra 9 million in cap space this year. It'll be around 125 Million next year. That will help with the salary increases. Tanny is a cap guru, he'll figure it out. And someone has to restructure for the good of the team. Our guys are high character. Someone will do it.
Kendall would have gotten a 1 yr deal, and then Faneca may have been coming here anyway... Faneca's leadership on the OL and his tenacity are important to this team.
There's not many people who CAN restructure. Coles is getting guarenteed money, so he's certainly not, and all of our other standouts are making peanuts as it is.
Am I correct in my understanding that there will be NO CAP in 2010? That would suggest every team should restructure contracts to defer vast amounts of money to that season.
The way the cap increases every year, even if they don't do away with it, it will end up being obsolete someday anyway. There's no cap in 2010 unless the owner's union agrees on a new CBA. I doubt they do, some influential owners (see: Jerry Jones) started signing players like crazy the moment they opted out of the old CBA.
Let go, hell no. If we draft a ILB in the upcoming draft, we might be able to ask him to restructure. You don't just cut starters that are leading the team in tackles.
Brett has restructured in the past. He might do it again, assuming he returns, and the Jets want him to.
