Games played under 35 degrees or in rain or in snow would FORCE the roof to be closed!!!!!!!!!!! Change the name of the team to the NY Sissys if you want a freaking roof.....I dont know about you but the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS dont play in a cozy little dome....not like you were gonna get a Superbowl ticket anyway, your real gripe should be with Woody for making you share a stadium
when the NBA finals are played on lambu field in a snow storm, then the jets can play indoors on hardwood. until then, mud baby, mud.
Dome my ass. Domes suck and by the way natural grass should be mandatory in all nfl stadiums. Fake turf ruins the game of football. Grass and mud make the game better. I was pissed when they put that fake crap in at giants stadium. I don't like the steelers but they refuse to give in to putting fake grass in their stadium. The first few super bowls were played in the freezing cold so there is no reason why the new meadowlands could not host a super bowl. Except the people with the money are pussies and they have become a bunch of cry babies about the elements. Elements make football football! If you play a regular season game in the cold ass weather why should the super bowl be any different.
Why not? You have a QB that doesn't have the arm to throw through a stiff wind and a bitch of a WR in plaxico. This isn't to stir up an argument, but I think a dome actually plays to the strengths of the current makeup of the Giants.
I used to live across the street from the rail yards on the west side of Manhattan. I lived on 30th Street and 10th Avenue in the 1970s. It was a vast wasteland. The rail yards are a barren nothing in the heart of the world's greatest city. There was nothing in that neighborhood (except for a McDonalds on 34th Street and the Javits Center a mile or so uptown). Then Woody Johnson suddenly wanted to build a new, state-of-the-art Jets stadium over the rail yards! Man, was I pumped! The New York Jets--in New York! In a stadium right off the Hudson Tunnel! Remember that pipe dream? The Jets were going to build THEIR OWN STADIUM on the west side of Manhattan, and it would have also served as an annex to the Javits Center. It would feature restaurants like Peter Luger's, Nobo, and more--it would be a like a mini-Manhattan, the kind of project they're building in Las Vegas as we speak. It was an amazing idea, one that would involve improving mass transit and create the kind of stadium that could host Super Bowls and Final Fours. But SHELDON SILVER vetoed the idea, apparently for the simple reason that the principals didn't spend enough time kissing his butt. Silver, and a bunch of leftist communists who hate the idea of creating jobs and improving New York City (the same sort of douchebags who voted against Westway in the 1970s), managed to defeat the idea. He was supported by the most evil and venal sports owners ont he face of the Earth: the Cablevision owners. The same creeps who have been destroying the New York Knicks and the Rangers. They helped bring down Woody Johnson's dream stadium because they could not stand the fact that it would compete against Madison Square Garden! And of course, they were planning a NEW, state-of-the-art MSG Center across the street from the current MSG... But suddenly (around the same time that they lost a sexual harassment suit) they ran out of money for the project... Yes, these are the kind of wonderful people we have in New York... So what has happened to the area since then? NOTHING. As usual, cretins like Silver are experts at defeating a wonderful idea, but bankrupt when it comes to actually creating a project that is good for New York City. It's the same bullspit that has prevented Ground Zero from rising again, and it's the kind of thing that pains us New Yorkers. The inability of our politicians to rebuild the part of NYC that the terrorists attacked is a mockery. It is as if they are in league with the terrorists. Yes, I know there are many Jets fans who opposed the West Side stadium because it would have curtailed tailgaiting or whatever, but really, this was the best chance for the Jets to establish their own identity and become the True New York Football team for decades to come. You Jets fans who don't live in this city won't relate to my rantings and ravings here, but believe me, this affects the team even more than their draft choices or coaching changes.
I hear you 100%. I grew up right outside of Manhattan and remember how long that area has been a real wasteland. I still remember looking at the artists' renditions of what it would have looked like if they had built it. It probably would have been the most impressive stadium in the NFL and could have been an amazing boon to the city - and of course to Jets fans in particular. They fucked up BIG TIME.
They did fuck up, and I was in favor of the West Side Stadium. It would've given us some prestige. But Jets fans as a whole were never united behind this project. Remember...we were all over the place. Some wanted a 50/50 partnership and a new stadium in the meadowlands (what we're getting now) some wanted a new stadium in queens...some wanted to just refurbish shea. Some wanted our own stadium somewhere in Jersey. Heck, some were fine with letting the Giants build whatever they want and just have us take the old giants stadium and knock down the sign! Many feared the loss of tailgating at the WSS Let's face it, the Jets belong as much to Jersey now as they do to NY. This new building is perfect for the jersey contingent. for the ny fans...well you should've voted silver out!
The Super Bowl has never been played in freezing cold - the only times it hasn't been in the south is when it was at Stanford in 1985, and the three games in indoor stadiums (1982, 1992, 2006).
"Yes, I know there are many Jets fans who opposed the West Side stadium because it would have curtailed tailgaiting or whatever, but really, this was the best chance for the Jets to establish their own identity and become the True New York Football team for decades to come." The tailgating would have been worse but the bar-gating would have been better.
I was in favor of the westside stadium just for the infrastructure improvement alone. However, you wanna point the finger? Point it at those snobbish folks who live over on West Ave, and south along 10th, 11th aves. Alot of those people, the ones who contribute bigtime to Silver, said NIMBY. The Jets got fucked again on that deal and like was stated earlier in the thread, Meadowlands II is simply that. A cash cow for both the Giants and the Jet Ownership. For those that are purist regarding the retractable dome and playing on NG, I ask how you could have forgotten how bad that turf in GS was for many years. NG simply isn't feasible anymore. Football has moved on since the days of Lombardi and Namath. You don't watch TV on black and white tiny tubes anymore. You don't pay 20buks or so for a ticket to a football game anymore. You don't hunt for your dinner anymore (at least most of us...) Nor do you pay .25 for a ride downtown on the b'way local. You can pine for the "good old days" all you want, but don't bitch when other venues that have moved on with the times rack in the huge dollars during SB week and other indoor/outdoor venues. Sad thing is, dome or no dome, the rare sighting at the Meadowlands II will be the average fan. Football is fueled and funded by the Corporations now, not Joe 6pack (god I hate that euphemism). This ain't your father's NFL anymore..
A retractable roof would have been perfect. The Jets would have complete control during the regular season to keep it open even during inclement weather. They could have hosted the Superbowl, a college bowl game, NCAA Basketball finals, concerts etc. The money lost is mind boggling
Er somewhere I remember reading that the new stadium was being built with the possibility of adding a dome later into its existence. Can U say another PSL for "renovations" just like the GBPs & Bears charged recently?
The Jets would NOT HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL over when and when not to close the roof. This was discussed a long time ago as the league has a rule that if you have a retractable roof it must be closed in weather under 35 degrees and in rain or snow. As far as "I don't like the steelers but they refuse to give in to putting fake grass in their stadium" The Steelers changed their surface already, they are no longer grass.
I think natural grass is the more important consideration. The artificial stuff causes a lot of injuries.
i dont care about the domes, but the poor design/unique-ness of the stadium pisses me off. I just dont get it, the jets should be in queens or the west side. Even if they needed to share the stadium, the giants and jets should have tryed to return to new york. a retractable roof would be cool for Super Bowl/Final Fours and shows, though.
