I took my previous experiment a little further and will now take a stab at power rankings. I want to see how they compare with the numbers Rambo has produced.

I take into account 5 stats each on offense and defense. For offense I have points scored, passing yards, rushing yards, 3rd down percentage, turnovers(Ints+fumbles). For defense I have points allowed, rushing yards allowed, passing yards allowed, turnovers forced(Ints+FF), sacks. I'm not too happy using sacks and would like a different stats but it is what I've got now.

    Here we go:
1 - NYG: 22.7 - The Gints have no real weaknesses and a strong run game.
2 - Tenn: 21.1 - Their defense is allowing the fewest points in the league and taking the ball away at a high rate.
3 - Phi: 19.3 - High scoring passing game with an aggressive pass rush.
4 - Pitt: 17.4 - Below average offense with a very good defense.
5 - Washington: 17.3 - Good rushing game with no Ints! Balanced D but not taking the ball away.
6 - Baltimore: 17.2 - Good rushing game getting very few points. Very good balanced defense.
7 - TB: 16.7 - Average offense, good balanced defense.
7 - Ari: 16.7 - The offense is all about the pass and it seems to be working. Defense is statistically average.
9 - Chi: 16.1 - Scoring points by not giving the ball away. Not good against the pass.
10 - GB: 15.1 - Offense is similar to the Bears but give the ball away quite a bit more. Instead they take the ball away with a good pass defense.
10 - Car: 15.1 - Average offense that is protecting the ball. Allowing few points with a balanced defense.
12 - NE: 14.4 - Good rushing game while protecting the ball. Defense is allowing average yards but keeping the opposition out of the endzone.
13 - Dal: 14.2 - Good offense, very good on third down but giving the ball away at a high rate. Defense is pretty average but not taking the ball away (worst in the league.)
14 - Buff: 14.0 - Average offense but not giving the ball away. Average defense.
15 - Mia: 13.7 - Mia is doing it with an efficient passing game that doesn't give the ball away. Their pass defense is weak but they can take the ball away.
15 - SD: 13.7 - High scoring passing game with a weak rush. Defense is bad against the pass.
17 - NYJ: 13.6 - Average offense putting up decent points but worst in the league at giveaways. Good run defense with a poor pass defense while near the top of the league in sacks. Overall mind boggling.
18 - NO: 13.2 - Mixed bag on offense. Amazing passing, good on scoring and third down. Ineffective rushing while giving the ball away. Defense is poor against the pass.
19 - Minn: 12.6 - Decent rushing game, trouble on third down and turnovers. Good rushing defense.
20 - Jac: 12.5 - Offense is good at protecting the ball, decent on third down but low scoring. Defense is poor against the pass, few sacks.
21 - Ind: 12.2 - Rushing offense is near non-existant, passing game is decent. Defense is having trouble with the run but effective on pass defense.
21 - Hou: 12.2 - Good passing game and on third down but turns the ball over a fair bit. Defense allows a good bit of scoring and does not take the ball away.
23 - Atl: 10.9 - Good rushing game, otherwise average offense. Poor pass defense with few takeaways.
24 - Den: 10.1 - Decent offense while giving the ball away a fair bit. Bad defense.
25 - Cle: 9.5 - Poor offense that has trouble passing and scoring. Allows few points but has trouble with the run.
26 - Oak: 8.6 - Decent rushing but otherwise non-existent offense. Defense has trouble with the rush but decent at takeaways.
27 - SF: 8.5 - Horrible on third down and gives the ball away. Takes the ball away but allows alot of scoring.
    28 - Sea: 8.3 - Non-existent passing game. Cannot stop the pass.
29 - StL: 5.7 - Offense is horrible. Defense arguably as bad.
30 - Cin: 2.1 - Offense is horribler. At least the defense is good against the pass.
30 - KC: 2.1 - Has a bit of a rushing game, otherwise a horrible offense. Defense can not stop the run or rush the pass.
    32 - Det: 0.0 - Wow, just wow.

Lol on Detroit. I'm glad to see some other people jump into the scrum. Maybe we can create an average ranking if enough people come up with a good methodology.

What are you basing the rankings on? Season stats or game by game stats? Is it just a straight average or total or are the different stat categories weighted differently?

Do you have a good site for statistical data? I'd like to incorporate more data into like you have but I am reluctant to do much search and input (...as of now I just put in the scores each week and everything else is largely automated in a spreadsheet.

The only positive thing I can say about Detroit is that their passing offense doesn't suck as bad as the rest of their offense and they get a league average amount of sacks.

I get all my data from nfl.com. For offensive rankings, I enter points scored per game, passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, 3rd down conversion percentage, add ints + fumbles to get turnovers. For defensive rankings I enter points allowed per game, rushing yards and passing yards allowed per game, sacks and I add ints and forced fumbles to get turnovers. This part is all manual :(. I'd love to have a way to pull back all the data at once.

The only stat that is really dependent upon the number of games played is sacks. I need to find another stat to replace that one.

I'd love to find a site with red-zone conversion percentage. I looked one day and couldn't find anything. That said I need another way to measure a team's defense before I add another offensive stat. It would also be good to somehow measure special teams.

For each category I calculate the average and standard deviation and use that to determine a z-score for each team's ranking. Then I sum the z-scores across all the categories for each team. For these rankings I normalized the outcome so that Detroit had zero points. This part is all automated in excel.

The "analysis" I added at the end was based upon a quick look at the z-scores for each category to see where teams were doing well and where they are performing poorly.

My second take at this. I find that the difference between each team in the 5-23 range are pretty small.

1 - NYG - 23.8 - Very good in all phases of the game, except passing yardage.
2 - TEN - 20.6 - Very strong defense. Passing attack leaves something to be desired.
3 - PHI - 18.2 - Good defense matched with a high scoring passing offense. Rushing game leaves something to be desired.
4 - ARI - 17.9 - 2nd best offense in the league. Rushing D is good, probably because they force the other team to pass.
5 - BAL - 16.9 - Strong defense matched with a good rushing game. Passing attack is weak.
6 - PIT - 16.7 - Second best defense in the league matched with a below average offense. Below average in every offensive category.
7 - WAS - 16.2 - Above average on both sides of the ball. Very few turnovers and rushing game is still top 5.
8 - TB - 15.4 - Good defense matched with an above average balanced offense. Need to turn the ball over less.
9 - CHI - 15.1 - Good offense matched with an average defense. Their pass defense is well below average. How will their offense fare in the next few weeks is a big question.
10 - NYJ - 14.9 - Offensive stats are pulled below average by turnovers. Defense is not so hot against the pass, otherwise above average.
11 - GB - 14.4 - Above average on both sides of the ball. Their rushing defense is much below average however.
12 - ATL - 14.2 - Very strong rushing attack matched with few turnovers.
13 - CAR - 13.9 - Above average on both sides of the ball. Not giving the ball away and preventing their opponents from scoring.
14 - MIA - 13.1 - Passing game is keeping the offense alive; however, having a hard time converting on 3rd down. Defense is susceptible to the pass.
15 - MIN - 13.0 - Good rushing attack with an average passing game. Defense is strong against the rush.
16 - NO - 12.8 - High scoring passing attack with a poor running game. Defense is well below average.
17 - DAL - 12.5 - Offensive stats are slipping quickly. Defense is not getting take-aways, otherwise average. My ratings systems rates them pretty high due to their number of sacks.
18 - NE - 12.3 - Well above average rushing attack with a weak passing game. Defense is average in yardage but has very few takeaways.
19 - IND - 11.6 - Worst running game in the league matched with an above average passing attack and very few turnovers. Poor rushing defense but defends well against the pass.
20 - JAC - 11.4 - Slightly above average offense due to a lack of turnovers matched with a below average defense that rarely touches the opposing QB.
21 - HOU - 11.1 - Good in passing situations on offense. Allowing alot of points.
22 - BUF - 11.0 - Well below average rushing game matched with an average defense.
23 - SD - 10.8 - High scoring passing attack that tends to give the ball away. Defense is horrible against the pass.
24 - DEN - 8.5 - Strong in passing situations. Defense is bad pretty much across the board. Can occasionally sack the opposing QB but has the fewest takeaways in the league.
25 - CLE - 7.8 - Ineffective offense that rarely turns the ball over. Below average on rushing defense but decent on pass defense.
26 - SEA - 7.4 - Almost non-existant passing game matched with an average rushing game. Below average defense.
27 - OAK - 6.4 - Above average rushing game that is slipping rapidly. The absolute worst on third down (24%). Below average defense that cannot stop the run but gets takeaways.
28 - SF - 6.2 - Below average offense that cannot third down and gives the ball away. Below average defense that allows alot of points.
29 - KC - 4.0 - Poor offense that hass an average rushing game. League worst rushing defense that very rarely touches the opposing QB.
30 - CIN - 2.9 - Worst scoring offense, horrible in nearly every other category. Merely poor defense.
31 - STL - 2.8 - Bad offense that rarely turns the ball over. Defense is bad in every way except sacks.
32 - DET - 0.0 - They don't have the worst passing attack in the league. They do have the worst overall defense.

Wow, I just saw Rambo's thread and now this: I LOVE THIS STUFF. I used to do this sort of thing with another forum, a Mets forum. After each game, I had a formula that I used to award points to each player based on their performance to the game and contribution to the win (or loss). It was then adjusted so the maximum points a player received was 6, and then, if necessary, it was scaled down to 10 total points between the players (less than 10 was okay). It was so much fun to tweak it all of the time and stuff.

I'm going to take a stab at this, too; I love this stuff.

Philly ties the Bungals, and you have them ranked 4th??? That's sad.

Philly is still top 6 in points scored (26.4), top 4 in passing yards(268.5), number 1 in sacks(36). They have the third best points differential in the league at 7.1.

Their defense is above average in every category. I rate them as the fourth best defense in the league.

If I remove sacks and defensive takeaways, they drop to 8th best defense in the league and 10th overall.

I think they're much better than their record. Recently their ranking in takeaways has been dropping, that can be seen in the results of their games.

JetFaninMD -- This is great. I was just wondering if you could talk a little bit more about the method you use to get the points. Do you use categories as rankings, meaning if the Jets are 5th in sacks they get 5 points for that category? Do you go strictly by the numbers or do you use any judgement?

I ask this, because it might be interesting to try to account for opponent's quality or see how predictive the rankings are of future wins and losses.

Philly and Bal are the only two I would disagree with in the Top 10. But overall it looked pretty good.

I'd love to add a couple of special teams stats but as it is this is taking a good deal of time.

For each category I calculate the average and standard deviation and use that to determine a z-score for each team's ranking. Then I sum the z-scores across all the categories for each team. I also sum for offensive and defensive categories. For the overall rankings I normalized the outcome so that Detroit had zero points. This part is all automated in excel.

The "analysis" I added at the end was based upon a quick look at the z-scores for each category to see where teams were doing well and where they are performing poorly.

A z-score basically tells you how many standard deviations from mean a score is. So if a team is one standard deviation above mean, their score for that category will be +1. If they are one deviation below mean, their score will be -1.

In the end the math rules. As such, Philthy is 4th with an ugly tie and all.

I'm honestly not sure what its worth, but I've found it helps me to understand where each team's strengths and weaknesses lie.

Id did a PR article for Petro a few ears ago. I think I still have the spread sheet I used.

I used 10 different ranking polls, offensive rank, defensive rank, points for, points against, and even strength of schedule.

You're surely a better man than me.

I actually have USA today and CNNSI rankings in my spreadsheet but don't use them for this exercise. I've never been that big a fan of those systems.

That said for games remaining, from the latest USAtoday rankings:
Jets average opponent is ranked 17.8 for the rest of the season.
    Cheats - 17.8
    Bills - 18.0
    fish - 20.2

I added W/L record, special teams return yards and punt net yardage as stats and re-sorted. Previous rank is from this week's previous ranking, not last week. No updates from last night's stats either.

    Updated rankings:

    2(2) - Ten -
    3(5)- NYJ - Leon!
    4(4) - Phi -
    5(8) - Car - Above average ST.
6(3) - Ari - Arizona has consistently bad special teams.
7(7) - Bal - Strong punting game, bad return game offset.
    7(9) - TB -
9(6) - Pit - All around bad ST.
    10(14) - NE - Good return game.
    10(10) - GB -
    12(11) - Ind -

    The worst have gotten worser.

1(1) - NYG - Best running game in the league. Very good in all phases of the game, no significant weaknesses.
2(5) - NYJ - Above average everywhere except passing yards allowed and giveaways.
3(2) - TEN - Still the second best defense, offense is merely average.
4(9) - TB - Strong defense that excells against the pass matched with an average offense.

5(7) - BAL - Stronger D than TB. Offense is very good running the ball but weak passing. Return yardage is anemic.
6(6) - PIT - Number one defense. Return yardage is the worst in the league. Below average offense. Highest ranked team with a below average side of the ball.
7(14) - NE - Offense is putting up above average numbers, strong return game, Defense is average.
8(3) - ARI - It is tough playing the Gints. Excellent high scoring passing attack matched with an average defense that does well against the rush. Anemic run game.

9(8) - CAR - Decent defense matched with an average offense. Average special teams.
10(4) - PHI - I expect they will drop more next week. Defensive numbers are still hanging in there. Still leading the league in sacks. Offense is average.
11(12) - ATL - Did much better than the other team tied at 12 last week. Second best rushing game on a strong offense. Defense and special teams are below average.
12(19) - NO - Best passing attack in the league with a not-so-hot rushing game. Defense is below average. Punting game is bad.

13(16) - DAL - Average offense that does well on third down but turns the ball over frequently. Return game is poor. Defense is average but gets few takeaways while racking up the sacks.
14(15) - WAS - Strong rushing game with few turnovers. Worst punting game in the league. Decent defense strong against the pass.
15(11) - IND - Worst rushing offense in the league. Best in the league at converting on third down. Fewest giveaways in the game. Return game is poor. Defense is dead average.
16(10) - GB - Still a top five scoring offense with an average defense. Defense is weak against the rush while remaining strong against the pass.

17(24) - BUF - Slightly below average offense and defense. High number of giveaways. Best special teams in the league. The highest rated team below average in offense and defense.
18(21) - SD - Decent passing game with weak rushing attack. Best punting in the league.
19(20) - CHI - Slightly above average offense and defense matched with poor special teams. Defense is strong against the run but poor against the pass.
20(18) - MIN - Decent defense that is strong against the run, does well with takeaways and get pressure on the opposing QB. Special teams are bad.

21(12) - MIA - Average offense and defense. Bad special teams.
    22(16) - JAC - Average.
23(22) - DEN - Strong passing attack, defense is bad across the board.
24(23) - HOU - Good passing attack, gives the ball away too much. Has trouble keeping the other team out of the endzone. Defense is average against the pass otherwise poor

25(25) - CLE - Offense below average in every category except giveaways. Defense has serious trouble stopping the run and getting to the opposing QB.
26(28) - OAK - Good punter. Passing game is a joke. Defense cannot stop the run. Passing defense is slipping.
27(27) - SF - Below average offense tends to give the ball away. Decent special teams. Bad pass defense that allows too many points.
28(26) - SEA - Competing with Oak for worst passing game in the league. Competing with SD for worst pass defense.

29(29) - KC - Average rushing game in a below average offense. Special teams aren't very good. Defense is worst in the league.
30(30) - CIN - Offense seems to get worse every week, not getting better this week either facing Bal. Bad special teams. Bad defense that is average against the run.
    31(31) - STL - Detroit with a punter.
    32(32) - DET - Detroit.

    Up:
    TB 8 -> 9 -> 4
    NE 11 -> 14 -> 7

Dude seriously, the Bills (16) lose to the Niners (26) in Buffalo they are 1-4 in their last 5 and you have them moving up the board, it's doesn't take a genius to figure out the Bills should not be moving up nor should they be ranked that high.
