    Law move a big gamble
    November 10, 2008
By now, you?re probably wondering, ?Why Ty Law??

Good question. To me, the move reeks of desperation. Evidently, Eric Mangini has lost confidence in rookie CB Dwight Lowery, nickel back Drew Coleman and Justin Miller, who can?t even get on the field.

Law?s agent, Carl Poston, told me this evening that he?s been talking to the Jets since the summer. Things heated up about two weeks ago, he said ? just about the time when Lowery?s struggles really intensified. He had a rough game in Buffalo, where he was benched in the second half, and he committed two penalties in Sunday?s rout of the Rams.

This explains why the Jets showed interest last week in free agent DeAngelo Hall, who wound up signing with the Redskins. That would?ve been a really desperate move because Hall is a major problem child that would?ve threatened locker-room chemistry.

Funny, but back in 2005, Law was regarded by some within the Jets? organization as a prima donna, a high-maintenence player that was all about himself. That said, he still picked off 10 passes and made the Pro Bowl. But, in the last two seasons with the Chiefs, Law was nothing close to his previous form ? a form that could get him into the Hall of Fame one day. Plus, he hasn?t been in a camp, which means he can?t be in good shape. Nevertheless, he told NFL.com that he expects to play Thursday night against the Patriots.

That could be disastrous. There?s no way a 34-year-old cornerback can come off the street, practice for two days and be ready to play a big game. This is a huge gamble by the Jets. If Law gets torched on his old turf, the Jets will look foolish.

this article wraps every concern about Ty Law i had last night into a neat little package.

I'm not a big Cimini supporter....but i defenitly share his concerns on Ty Law.

Yeah, everything he says is true. I wonder if somebody is hurt and as usual we just don't know it. Then again, maybe Mangini just wants Bellichick to gameplan against him and has no intention of playing him at all. I wouldn't doubt that either.

I think it is a great move. Obviously cornerback is a huge concern for us, so we go out and get a veteran who can, at the very least, do better than what we have at that position currently.

We have one of the best defenses in the league and it probably just got a lot better.

If Law was such a problem child, then why did New England--being the consumate team orientated organizatio--keep him for so long?

    Where did you hear this?

If this is indeed true, how is Miller the odd man out? Coleman has been awful all season.

I bet there is attitude issues with Miller, and that explains his lack of playing time.

No way did Miller get released. Like someone said before me, Coleman would go first unless there was some sort of injury we didn't hear about.

My problem with this whole situation is the lack of foresight concerning the cornerback position. Yes, Darrelle Revis is fantastic, but past him we have spotty talent at best. We went into the season with Lowery at the #2 spot and Coleman at the nickel. We had cut Hank Poteat in the offseason. Once it became startlingly obvious that Coleman couldn't handle his duties, we re-signed Poteat.

Now that we know it was a mistake to have a not-so-speedy 4th round rookie starting at number 2, we have signed Ty Law... who hasn't been effective since the Jets signed him in '05... and I question his effectiveness even then. Say what you want about his 10 INTs that year, he was responsible for a ton of penalties that year and it was because he had lost a step.

While I don't like how Cimini is passing judgment on this move as a supposedly 'impartial' sports journalist, I kind of agree with him.

Every move the Jets make reeks of desperation to Cimini. The fact is, the Patriots talked to law and were interested in De Angelo hall as well. Are they also desperate?

This signing has nothing to do with Dwight Lowery and more to do with depth concerns at safety and cornerback. Whether Law is an upgrade to the current guys is questionable, but Eric Smith still has headaches and drew Coleman has had a bad season. Law will see playing time in specific packages. He won't be lined up one on one with Welker or Gaffney.

Do you really think Justin Miller picked anything up from the defensive playbook?

Other than his copy for BB to read, probably not.

I think he could help them in the return game.

Is it me or has every move we've made since the offseason "reeked of desperation"? Jesus Christ, I didn't realize signing free agents to try to improve your team made you desperate. And I'd imagine that a 4-5 team might make a "desperate" move to save a season but we're 6-3 tied for 1st place! I know it has nothing to do with Law but every f*ckin move we make always has a negative spin on it. Well I say hats off to the front office and f*ck these writers!

Yeah i don't see how improving your team is desperation. Pretty soon, he will say our draft picks reek of desperation too.

we signed the guy to a one year deal. im assuming none of the money is guaranteed which means we could cut him tomorrow if it isnt working out. i dont quite see how that is desperation.

also why cant he be in good shape? if the jets and pats have been talking to him all year the guy has probably been going to the gym in some of his free time.

im really having trouble seeing how this move is bad. unless he gets beat for the game winning td on thursday this a situation where the jets really cant lose.
