I have seen better efforts by kickers, and wussy kickers to boot. If thats what he has to offer, I don't see LT fixin him either
Wallace Wright and Carroll did the same thing against McKelvin. But those two did it while standing next to each other and both had good angles. Gholston was in space.
You're talking about a second round pick versus the #6 pick in the draft. Have there been LBs who didn't have great stats the first year and then developed into great players? Of course. What I take from this is that the Jets staff is disappointed in him and expected more. But we Jet fans know better.
I believe LT is the perfect mentor for Gholston he now has one of the most athletically gifted players to play the game. I'm not comparing the two but Gholston is also an extremely gifted athlete. Mangini can teach him the Xs and Os of the game better than anyone else, and LT will help him unleash the beast within which we have all seen glimpses of from his college highlights. hopefully he will get the best of both worlds and live up to his enormous potential.
I still believe that once he learns the defense better...his job is gonna primarily be to attack the LOS. There isn't alot of "instinct" involved in that. It's physical skills to disrupt the blocking schemes up front. Gholston has the strength and explosion to do that...he will rarely be put out in space and will solely be a thumper w/ superior physical ability.
maybe somewhere in the world there is such thing as a brain transplant.. and then these two meeting each other would actually mean something...
This kid was way over rated and everyone in Ohio will say it. We always draft the workout warriors. He needs more that help. I am a BIG LT fan bt this kid might be a lost cause.
I dont understand this. What exactly are you talking about. This isnt just about learning. This is about a kid that spent his college career with his knuckles on the ground and now he has to concentrate on pass coverage also....this isnt about not getting a "system". How hard is that to understand. We happen to have a player on our roster with the last name of Pace that took years to get the transition. So Gholston is trying to take the fast track and learn from the best. How hard is that to either understand or respect. How anyone can be labeled a bust after 8 games means only one thing...you want him to bust to prove a point or to defend an arguement..which is kind of sad..no? This is a kid that put fear into qb and running backs eyes from the down position for a major college program....and you and a few others scream "bust!" after 8 games. I dont get it..or maybe I do.
I wanted Long and Ryan (very few on this board liked Ryan, so cheers to us :beer but I knew they weren't going to last till 6. Gholston was the obvious pick. Just have to hope he gets it and produces in some sort of fashion. In the bigger picture, every regime has a huge draft bust somewhere along the lines. He might be it, he may not. It happens to everyone. Lets enjoy the Brick, Mangold, and Revis selections- because they all are cornerstones of this franchise. No one is perfect. If we re-did the draft, I'm still taking Gholston at 6.
Nice post. Puts a different perspective on it, though it's not a pleasant one to some fans. I wonder if I said this if it would be considered spin. Or if this'll be considered spin anyway. One other negative spin: Greg Hardy and Brian Orakpo should be drafted this year, amongst others. Not that this is a huge nail in Gholston's coffin in my eyes, but I'd take both of those guys over Gholston if they were in the same draft.
If its great depth, than why not. The media/this board/everyone would question why, but having 4 guys with talent/upside at the most important LB position in the 3-4 isn't bad thing. Can any of them play both LB positions for added depth? And where are they going to be drafted?
Yea, I think they can. Combine would confirm it really. I'd say Orakpo is a lock to go in the top 15, even this early on. He's an extremely talented, intelligent, mature, and hard working football player. If Hardy gets his head straight, he's a Merriman clone. I'm not even exaggerating either. He's that kind of athlete, and that kind of pass rusher. He can go anywhere from the high first to the early third IMO...gotta wait for combine season (if he even declares he's a junior). Everette Brown and Sergio Kindle are two other extremely high upside guys who'll be available in the draft and coupld play LB in the 3-4. The guy who would fit perfectly with the Jets? Clint Sintim from Virginia. He's a Karlos Dansby clone. Like Dansby, he's just a dude with first round type value....extremely athletic, high motor, highly intelligent, highly versatile, good blitzer, good against the run, has shown ability to drop back in coverage....but he probably won't go in the first. Definitely one of my favorite players in the draft. He's a steal in the making.
^ I like the sound of Sintim - cool name too. Dansby jumped out at me in 2006 against the Giants on 9/11. My uncle had tickets and I went to that game. It was a blowout, but Dansby was the shining light in that game for the Cards. If he's like him, get him. Is he a 4th round guy, where all the playmaking steals come from?
Like Dansby, he'll probably go in the second. I don't think he lasts into the second day. Also, like Dansby I think he could play ILB/OLB. Theres alot of linebackers to like...another name I keep hearing is Scott McKillop. He's another guy who just knows how to play. He's not the blitzer Sintim is though.
