I for one am kind of pleased that VG is not happy with his own progress -- enough so, to reach out to a real LB extraordinaire [regardless of his 'dietary irregularities'].
That and there is also a very large degree of complexity in his new defensive scheme as well as a position change. I am not worried yet, I will be worried mid way through year two if there is not some strides shown
I saw him miss a tackle on a kickoff return; he showed extremely bad form. I hope looking out for advice from LT is not an act of desperation, but admission that he has to do something, fast, to get better than just showing up around the pile.
Sorry but did anyone else see his attempt at a tackle on that 40 yard kickoof return by Buffalo. I swear I have seen better efforts from kickers. If thats all he as to offer he is a bust. I know it was one play but he looked horrible
No, too bad too. We got Gholston and that just thrills you, right? Still no running game and no pass rush from their number one pick either. The invisible man.
LT is going to teach him how to "go out their like a bunch of crazed dogs and have some fun!" I don't think there's EVER going to be another like LT, but Gholston could still be a damned good player.
You can look at this a lot of ways. He recoginizes his washing out? He doesn't feel he is progressing in the Jets system? He doesn't feel the Jets coaching staff is helping his development? Its a move of desperation? He wants to be the best and is seeking the best to emulate? You have to give him credit for recoginizing he needs to make a change and for seeking out greatness.
"I told him in that scheme you need to know what everyone else around you is doing as well or even better than what you have to do," he said. "That's one thing I really tried to emphasize. When I played I knew exactly where Harry (Carson) and Carl (Banks), the linemen, the DB's — I knew what everyone was doing. When you get that down and you know where everyone around you is going to be on each play that puts you in a better position. "If you know exactly what everyone is doing, it takes a lot of the thinking out of it and you can use your physical tools a lot better." *********************** I had no idea that LT was so cerebral. I thought he just rushed the QB like a crazy man every play and didn't care about too much else. No wonder he was so good - combine awesome physical ability with great football knowledge.
I do know about Blair Thomas and I know about Johnny Lam Jones too. I still think this could be the worst ever. He was a number 6 pick, not a late 1st round or 2nd round pick, a number 6. It's not a skill position. All he has to do is push somebody out of the way and get after the QB or runner. He can't do either. He is pathetic. The whole premise of the article this thread is written about is that he is a bust.
You're a bust as far as posters go, but we still keep you around for your cheery disposition, especially after a big win. It's refreshing to see.
I watched Gholston and thought he stood up well at the point of attack on the few plays he was in the game for yesterday. I was really happy with what I saw.
I hate to attack somebody - but this line here is screaming to be assaulted. You have shown your complete ignorance by making this statement. I'll go so far to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that your hatred of the Gholston pick is causing you to reach and make an idiotic statement regarding him and his responsibilities as an outside linebacker playing for a coaching staff that is notorious for implementing complicated schemes that requires their players to understand very subtle nuances to be successful.
Its Bryan Cox's job to train young college LBs and turn them into pros. We expect coaches (Westhoff, Callahan, etc) to be able to do this as part of their duties. So what does it say that our supposed future franchise at LB is having to go outside of the organization and ask for help? Any opinions?
LT actually did have a very good grasp of the defense as well as the abilities of his teammates. He was a lot like Riggins in the sense that he came across as a nutjob, but there was a lot more going on inside his head then he let on. He also came across as crazy to initmidate opponents. When you combine his knowledge of the game with his sick athletic ability, I think they opposing QBs had a good reason to be afraid.
i will give him credit for asking for help, especially from a guy like lt. BUT i have to ask what the fuck have the jets been teaching him for the past 3+ months? it just may have something to do with the we will do everything different every week.? who knows. i do know that if you have physical skills you dont always have to know every little nuance in order to be at least semi productive. oh btw there are PLENTY of guys who are playing very very well in their rookie season. let me name a few off the top of my head. joe flacco, matt ryan. jamaal charles, joe forte, chris johnson, even felix jones, darrin mcfadden, ray rice and steve slaton. sedrick ellis, jerod mayo, the other guy who is a rookie lb in patsy land. there are PLENTY of guys who are doing very well in their rookie seasons. i will say it is probably easier for rbs but there are qbs, receivers, dl and lbs who are playing very very well. there is really no excuse for not have at least some amount of productivity. and while i will not call the kid a bust i dont expect shit from him the rest of this year and can only hope he does something next.
