thats the first thought i had when that INT in the 4th happened....we were up by 2 scores who the hell would call that play to try and run the score up?? that play was GREEDY IMO and it backfired and exposed the real gambler.

It wasnt so much a bad throw as it was a beautiful interception. Even so I guarantee that this thread would be bitching at the play calling had we run 3 times, got stopped and punted. You act like the play was a bomb down field, we werent trying to run-up the score we were running a pass play. You cant just go into a shell because you have the lead.

I don't mind that call at all. Favre should have thrown it away or taken the sack.

Wanna talk about a gamble? How about Mangini accepting the penalty after we stopped the Bills on third down giving them another opportunity on 3rd and 15 (i think). They ended up getting the first down and then Elam got the pick-6.

The 5 yards moved them from about a 42 yard attempt to a 47 yard attempt IF we stopped them for no gain. I thought that was a very strange decision to accept the penalty.

Jenkins and Elam made it pay off AFTER they got the first down though.

that was an awful coaching decision that turned into gold. they allowed them to get a first down and it looked like they were gonna get 7 instead of 3 and somehow the jets get a pick 6. sometimes its just better to be lucky.

Its not an awful coaching decision, its a great one.

What about the coaching decision by the Bills to go for the long pass and the 1st. The rational call brobably would have been to run and try and get back some of the lost 5 yards.

Ignoring the pick there were the following options for the bills:
Converting 3rd and 15 into a touchdown (unlikely. lets say 10%)
Getting stuffed on a running play (50%)
No worse of no better (40%)

Lindell has been perfect at under 40. Over 40 he is 8-11

So doing all the odds and expected values above we have:
    Accept the penalty: .1*7 + .5*.8*.73*3 + .4*3*.99 = 2.8
    Decline the penalty: .99 * 3 = 2.99

Better to accept the penalty. You may be tempted to stay on 16 in blackjack, and it you do and the dealer busts you may feel like you made the right call, but in reality over time you will lose more money than you make thanks to the odds shifting slighlty against you.

That was a perfect example of just how bad a coach Mangini is.

That was an absolutely baffling decision especially considering how lousy the Jets have been at getting their Defense off the field on 3rd downs. I guarantee you that Abram Elam is Mangini's new best friend. If the Bills had scored a TD on that drive, the whole game changes and there would have been dozens of "fire Mangini now!" posts today. I don't really see how anyone can defend that decision in that spot.

They were at the 25 yard line when we accepted the penalty so it would have been a 42 yard attempt. There is a fourth scenario that could have happened as well, which was probably the most likely. They gain some yards. It was very possible for them to gain the 5 yards back on an underneath pass while we defended the first down.

I didn't like the call at all, I'm not a fan of ever giving someone another chance to convert a first down. If accepting the penalty pushed them out of FG range then I can understand doing it, but this didn't and it could have burned us.

It would have been a good coaching decision if our defense could stop friggin Trent Edwards on 3rd and 13. Mangini can't just be like "Well, I'm not going to make the smart choice because my defense has a knack for tripping over their own feet." You gotta give your players the chance to make plays. If they can't make it happen, that's their fault.

Are you kidding me? 1 on 1 coverage, reciever got beat. If you were to just "throw it away" every time there is man coverage the NFL would be 90% run plays.

Agreed. You still have to throw a little, there's still almost a quarter to go, but the QB's decision was just bad.

The DB had great coverage and it was a comeback route. It was a dumb throw. If it were a fly or a post pattern where he could get some separation I can see throwing it because of the single coverage but not on a hitch. c'mon.

I thought that was a ballsy call by Mangini. Instead of basically giving them the 3, he gambled on his D to make a play on 3rd and 13. They didn't but they rewarded him with a pick-6 on the same drive and turned a -3 into a +7. Balls often gets rewarded, but nothing comes without a risk.

There's 1 simple reason why this was a bad call by Mangini, plan and simple.

We had Drew Coleman playing CB. As it turned out, that's exactly where they went and picked up 22 yards.

So you can go ahead and throw out any low probabilities that the Bills wouldn't convert on a 3rd and long with Coleman in the game. It was a bad...BAD...call by Mangini and Elam saved his ass with that pick.

That's a fan's perspective. As a coach he doesn't have Coleman in there if he's that certain he could be beat.

DB ran the route better than the WR. You can't blame that on a QB.

Problem is Coleman WAS beat by Parrish on that particular play. Matter of fact, if I remember correctly, Coleman was getting up from the ground after biting on a couple of moves by Parrish (which seemed to be where he was all game) and Lowery had to come back and make the play by pushing Parrish out of bounds.

Fact is, teams have zoned in on Coleman whenever they have a 3 and Long/Short to go because there's a high probability that they will get a 1st down. If I wanted to put doubt on the QB and/or lower those chances of giving up a 1st down, I would've put maybe Barrett to cover Parrish or Rhodes. I'm almost sure that that move alone decreases chances of them getting a 1st down on a 3rd and Long, because that's how bad Coleman is.

Ur missing the point. it was a simple 5 yd penalty. If it was a 15 yd, hell even if a 10 yd penalty, i would understand accepting it and making it a possible 50+ yd. FG. But 5 yds is not worth it. And who knows, Lindell couldve missed the FG. He did end up missing one later in the game. After that penalty being accepted i had to rub my eyes to make sure it was still Eric on the sideline and not Herm. Mangini has to make better decisions. He definitely dodged a bullet, no a missle, on that sequence.

In what world is throwing the ball to a guy covered like a blanket on a hitch route a good idea? I don't understand where you're coming from.

well you actually can. I thought that Favre, after throwing 300 INTs, would know a DB mirroring the WRs route should be a sign not to throw to him. He should also know a INT on a comeback route will more than likely be returned for a TD. So just take the sack Brett. That turnover couldve caused a very embarrassing loss for us
