The New York Jets released seven players, as they began trimming their roster down to the league's 75-player limit. The Gang Green released two kickers, PK Andrew Furney and PK Jacob Schum, leaving PK Nick Folk as the only kicker on the roster. RB Michael Smith, OL Bruce Campbell, OL Patrick Ford, and OL Markus Zusevics did not make the squad on the offense, while LB Steele Divitto was the only defensive player who got cut.
QB Geno Smith was officially named Week 1 starter, following Friday's loss against the Giants. Smith looked pretty impressive, completing 9 of 14 passes for 137 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT. QB Michael Vick will be #2 quarterback, and it looks like QB Matt Simms is pretty much a lock to keep his #3 spot on the depth chart.
The Jets also placed two rookies, CB Dexter McDougle and WR Shaq Evans, on injured reserve. The team currently has 81 players on the roster and will have to cut 6 more before Tuesday's deadline.
