The New York Jets have released CB Antonio Cromartie who had a $5M roster bonus due in the coming days. This move gave the Gang Green an additional $9.5M of salary cap space, putting them around $31M under the cap. According to various sources, the Jets have already reached out to CB Alterraun Verner of the Tennessee Titans who will become a free agent next week.
Last season Cromartie started in all 16 games for the Gang Green, registering 38 tackles (35 solo) and 3 interception. The Jets wanted him to replace departed CB Darrelle Revis but Revis' shoes turned out to be too big to fill, as Cromartie had a rather subpar season.
The Jets are also expected to release WR Santonio Holmes, generating an additional savings of $8.25M. If the Gang Green choose to also cut QB Mark Sanchez, they will get an additional $8.3M of salary cap space.
