NFL Draft

Jets mock draft: final edition

Admin - April 25, 2013

Following the trade of Darrelle Revis to Tampa Bay, the New York Jets now have two selections in the first round of today's NFL Draft - #9 and #13 overall. So, let's take a look at the final predictions from around the web:

Gary Myers, NY Daily News

#9: Barkevious Mingo DE-LB, LSU
Rex Ryan needs to get more pressure on the QB now that he’s without luxury of Darrelle Revis locking down No. 1 receivers. Would be a mistake to take Nassib or Geno Smith high in first round when neither is a franchise QB.

#13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
OK, he's only 5-8, 174. So what? He's a dynamic playmaker with 4.34 speed in the 40 who can score from anywhere. The Jets need to energize their fan base and their offense and getting the ball in Austin’s hands will do that — and help Mark Sanchez.

Rob Rang, CBS Sports

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The primary pass-rushers in Rex Ryan's 3-4 defense are supposed to be the outside linebackers, but that wasn't the case for the Jets a season ago when they received more production from their 300-pound defensive ends Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples than outside linebackers Bart Scott or Calvin Pace. Mingo, 6-4, 241, played out of position at defensive end at LSU, limiting his production, but he has the explosiveness and flexibility to star as a stand-up rusher.

#13: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
No team expecting to compete in 2013 is going to trade their best player for a draft pick. By dealing cornerback Darrelle Revis to Tampa Bay, the Jets began what could be an extensive overhaul of the roster. Incumbent starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has shown flashes but regressed badly last season, and the team reportedly explored including him as part of the package to the Bucs. At this pick, Smith is a palatable gamble.

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The Jets need a lot of help in several areas, mostly on offense, including the quarterback position. But the Jets have struggled to put pressure on the opponents' backfield and Mingo would give Rex Ryan\'s defense a pass rusher with upside.

#13: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
The Jets added this pick in the Darrelle Revis-to-Tampa trade and could go in several directions, especially if Geno Smith is still available. But they need to get stronger on offense and Tyler Eifert could be the target, after all, the Jets have had to watch Gronkowsi and Hernandez dominate in New England the past few years.

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The pass rush is really a problem. So they opt to take Mingo to liven it up.

#13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
He would add some explosive speed to a team that needs it.

Clark Judge, CBS Sports

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The Jets start their rebuilding by finding an outside pass rush. Rex Ryan thrives with pass-rush linebackers, and this is one of the best.

#13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
This makes too much sense not to happen. If the Rams are going to get him, they have to get ahead of Gang Green.

Pat Kirwan, CBS Sports

#9: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
It's clear the Jets have to manufacture a pass rush with pressure calls which eventually gets them in trouble, but Milliner at this point is to too good to pass up. A head coach told me today that Milliner is fine, health-wise, in his eyes.

#13: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
The Jets fortify the defense with a productive pass rusher.

Will Brinson, CBS Sports

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
Like I've said, the Jets can go in any sort of direction with their pair of picks. But grabbing Mingo at nine gives them plenty of flexibility with their next pick and ensures that they can improve their pass rush.

#13: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
Another cornerback would help to keep Kyle Wilson at the nickel; Antonio Cromartie is fine as their No. 1. And the Jets have plenty of quarterbacks, but they don't have a quarterback of the future on the roster. Geno might start Year 1 and represent a pretty good upgrade for this squad.

Mike Mayock, NFL.com

#9: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
The most explosive 3-4 outside linebacker in this draft is Dion Jordan. I think down the road, he could be Aldon Smith. I think he could be Jason Taylor. If he puts on 20 pounds, he could be DeMarcus Ware. He's got everything you want; he just needs 20 pounds and some seasoning.

#13: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Now we're going to prop up Mark Sanchez a little bit. In today\'s NFL, this kid matches up with everything that you want in a vertical tight end: At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, he's a nightmare for a linebacker or a safety.

Bucky Brooks, NFL.com

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
After trading Darrelle Revis, the Jets must upgrade their pass rush if they want the defense to remain among the league's elite. Mingo is raw, but offers tremendous athleticism and speed off the edge.

#13: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Rex Ryan likely will make a push for a cornerback, but surrounding Mark Sanchez with more talent is a bigger priority. Eifert is a dynamic playmaker between the hashes who can help Sanchez become a more efficient passer.

Gil Brandt, NFL.com

#3: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
PROJECTED TRADE WITH OAKLAND:
After getting an extra first-round pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (13th overall) in the Darrelle Revis trade, the Jets send their original first-rounder (ninth overall) and another pick to the Raiders in exchange for the third overall pick so they can grab Milliner -- the best corner available, and someone who can eventually replace Revis.

#13: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
By the time the first round is over, the Jets get their replacement for Revis in Milliner and the pass rusher they would have taken at No. 9 all along in Mingo.

Josh Norris, NFL.com

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
Mingo is a very athletic mover who flashes natural strength, but he needs development. He would hit the field early for the Jets.

#13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Many might expect the Jets to "replace" Darrelle Revis with this selection, but the team fared pretty well with Antonio Cromartie as its top corner. Most of all, Gang Green needs to score touchdowns, and Austin can do that in a variety of ways.

Peter King, SI

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The Rex Ryan Watch is on, but he gets one last wish: a versatile, physical rusher, and the Mr. Outside to Muhammad Wilkerson's Mr. Inside.

#13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
The Jets are desperate for playmakers on offense, and Austin might be the best one in the draft.

Mel Kiper, ESPN

#9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
Barkevious Mingo's versatility suits the Jets well. He'll upgrade the pass rush and his assignment discipline transitions nicely against the run.

#13: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Landing Chance Warmack creates a dominant interior presence for New York's line. Possessing the talent to run and pass block, Warmack's add easily helps Gang Green generate balance.

Nate Davis, USA Today

#9: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
Rex Ryan's love of cornerbacks is well known, and he just lost his favorite one. Best to grab the man who seems to be this crop's best corner now rather than let him fall into the clutches of the Miami Dolphins at No. 12.

#13: OLB Barkevious Mingo, LSU
Tight end and offensive line (and, eventually, running back) could be options if they are serious about giving QB Mark Sanchez a fighting chance at reviving his career. But with no bona fide pass rusher on the roster and the secondary significantly weakened by Darrelle Revis' departure — his lockdown skills allowed Ryan to employ creative blitz packages — a hunter like Mingo becomes imperative.
