In just 20 days the New York Jets will be on the clock in the 2013 NFL Draft. They have seven selections, including #9 overall, and so many holes to fill. The new GM John Idzik has stated that the draft will be the team's priority in rebuilding the squad that has gone from two championship game appearances in a row to a top 10 draft pick. So, let's take a look at who various sports websites have the Jets select in the first round of their mock drafts.
Player | Expert | Analysis |
Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon | Rob Rang, CBS | The primary pass-rushers in Rex Ryan's 3-4 defense are supposed to be the outside linebackers but that wasn't the case for the Jets a season ago, who received minimal production out of the position. Jordan has the potential to warrant top five consideration but teams could hesitate to pull the trigger this high due to less-than-ideal production and durability. Ryan, however, could be overwhelmed with Jordan's undeniable upside. |
Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU | Dane Brugler, CBS | The Jets need a lot of help in several areas, mostly on offense, including the quarterback position. But the Jets have struggled to put pressure on the opponents' backfield and Mingo would give Rex Ryan's defense a pass rusher with upside. |
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia | Pat Kirwan, CBS | Jones will pass most medical exams and the Jets will have a hard time passing on an outside linebacker with 74 plays behind the line of scrimmage. Rex Ryan will finally get a big nasty playmaker for the front seven. |
Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah | Pete Prisco, CBS | Rex Ryan would probably see another Haloti Ngata in him. |
Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU | Clark Judge, CBS | Yes, he's a gamble, but if you're right you may land the next JPP. Ansah has a world of talent. He just needs experience. |
Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama | Will Brinson, CBS | Once again: A large portion of this pick is predicated on the Jets dealing Darrelle Revis. If that doesn't happen -- and surely it will at some point -- then maybe this changes. I'd be stunned to see them go somewhere other than defense. |
Ziggy Ansah, DE, BYU | Akbar Gbajabiamila, NFL | Ansah is very raw -- who better to shape a young talent than Rex Ryan? Ansah could fill the Jets' long-standing pass-rush need. |
Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida St. | Gil Brandt, NFL | Werner is a pass rusher, and that's what the Jets are looking for. He had a very productive final year in college, collecting 13 sacks. I think he has a lot of upside. |
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia | Charley Casserly, NFL | After a lackluster performance at Georgia's pro day, Jones must excel in private workouts to hold this position. |
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia | Daniel Jeremiah, NFL | The Jets need more pass rush, and Jones is the perfect player to provide it. |
Ziggy Ansah, DE, BYU | Matt Smith, NFL | He's a splash player. He's an impact player. And while there's not a lot of tape on him, not a lot of production, you simply can't ignore what an athletic specimen Ansah is, and how easily he makes his way into the backfield. Rex Ryan will be giddy with the selection; the fans in N.Y. will boo the heck out of it. |
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia | Bucky Brooks, NFL | Rex Ryan desperately needs an explosive edge rusher to take his hybrid scheme to another level. Jones dominated the SEC with his explosiveness, and Ryan would love to tap into those skills to help Gang Green get back on track. |
Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida St. | Josh Norris, NFL | Yes, I'm projecting Darrelle Revis will indeed be traded. The Jets could target a pass rusher or nose tackle at this spot, but I think Rhodes will go earlier than expected. |
Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon | Charles Davis, NFL | After shoulder surgery, Jordan will need to get bigger and stronger, but his versatility and speed will help Gang Green in a big way. |
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia | Brian Billick, NFL | Rex Ryan needs a pass-rushing outside presence. The Jets could go to the offensive line, but if Fisher is gone, they probably won't. Lane Johnson is not worth it right here, for my money. Medicals are going to be key for Jones. |
Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee | Scott Pioli, NFL | The Jets need explosive players on offense, especially at wide receiver, and I think this is their guy. |
Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee | Mike Tannenbaum, NFL | I\'m giving the Jets a skill player in an area where we came up short last year (wide receiver). This guy is an explosive player who could help the Jets from Day 1. |
Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU | Mel Kiper, ESPN | If the Jets cannot move up in Round 1, taking a pass-rusher or defensive tackle seems to be the best option. Major money is committed to Mark Sanchez, and the idea of adding another disappointing QB doesn’t seem to be an option at all right now, so look for defense to be the pick at No. 9. In Mingo, the Jets get an unpolished physical specimen who can get to the QB with the best of them. The scary Jets defense of a few seasons ago looked anything but last year, earning only 30.0 sacks and 11 interceptions. As we’ve seen with cross-town rival New York (Giants), pass-rushing help can help mask deficiencies in the secondary. Look for Rex Ryan and new management to employ that strategy early and often in this draft. |
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia | Don Banks, SI | If the Jets pass him medically with his spinal stenosis condition, it's hard to imagine Rex Ryan passing on a player who has a habit of playing in the opponent's backfield. Jones is the kind of impact player for which New York's defensive front seven has been searching. |
Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon | DraftCountdown.com | After an extremely disappointing season things only seem to be getting worse for the Jets. To call this an organization in disarray would be an understatement as there doesn’t seem to be much of a long-term plan in place. Regardless of what the future holds every team needs pass rushers and with Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas both out of the picture New York must bring in someone who can be a threat off the edge. Oregon’s Dion Jordan is a freakish physical specimen with a long, rangy frame and outstanding speed and athleticism. Jordan could project to either defensive end or outside linebacker at the next level depending on scheme but the consensus is that his best fit would be standing up in an odd front. If Jordan is off the board, which is quite possible, there should still be some good pass rushers available at this point and the Jets could turn their attention to Ezekiel Ansah of B.Y.U. or Barkevious Mingo of L.S.U. With LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell both leaving as free agents there is also a huge hole at safety so Kenny Vaccaro of Texas would be a possibility. Alabama OG Chance Warmack could be in the discussion too if they are ready to give up on Vladimir Ducasse, who thus far has been a big bust. For what it’s worth the Jets have been linked to West Virginia QB Geno Smith too. |
