The Gang Green's free agency campaign suffered its first setback today, as S Reggie Nelson, whom the Jets had offered a contract, decided to stay with the Cincinnati Bengals. Now the Jets will have to shift their focus to S LaRon Landry, who visited the Gang Green over the weekend as well. Landry, however, might be a gamble as he suffered a season ending Achilles injury last two seasons. Landry is good against the run but struggled in coverage. The Patriots are also reportedly interested in him.
According to Ravens Insider, the Jets visited with DB Jarret Bush on Sunday as well. Bush isn't viewed as a potential starter at safety. He was the Packers' fourth cornerback and played well on special teams. Bush spent his entire career with the Green Bay Packers.
The Jets also inquired about former Redskins S O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe, 5'11", 205 lbs, spent the first six years of his career with the Rams before signing a 5-year contract for $26M with Washington last season. Atogwe played 13 games (8 starts), in the 2011 NFL season and recorded 60 combined tackles, 0.5 sacks, 3 INT, and six pass breakups. He was released on March 12.
The Jets are also bringing WR Donnie Avery for a visit next week. Avery, who ran 40 yards in 4.27 seconds before being drafted in 2008, had two good seasons with the Rams in 2008 and 2009. He suffered a season ending knee injury in the third preseason game of the 2010 season and was released before the 2011 season. He signed with the Tennessee Titans a few days later but had only 3 receptions for 45 yards, 1 TD in the entire season.
