According to ESPN.com, former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher will not interview for the Jets head coaching position. Although he is interested in the Jets job, Cowher told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson, however, plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager.
Cowher would have wanted to bring Kevin Colbert and/or Omar Khan from the Steelers to run the personnel side of the business.
Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.
So, according to this report, basically Woody Johnson chose Tannenbaum over Bill Cowher - the same Tannenbaum who drafted DE/LB Vernon Gholston and traded for QB Brett Favre...
Meanwhile, the New York Jets have asked the New York Giants for permission to interview defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for their vacant head coaching position, according to team sources.
