QB Brett Favre shrugged off three interceptions and led the New York Jets on a late fourth quarter comeback against the Kansas City Chiefs, as the Gang Green struggled against one of the worst NFL teams for the second week in a row.
New York, a 14-point favorites, took an early lead when Favre capped the first Jets possession with an 18-yard TD pass to RB Leon Washington. Later in the first quarter the Jets had a chance to extend their advantage but PK Jay Feely's field goal attempt from 36 yards went wide left. The defense quickly got the ball back, forcing the Chiefs to go three and out and then Favre threw his first interception of the game that instantly put the struggling on offense Chiefs inside the Jets territory.
Just four plays later Kansas City capitalized on Favre's turnover and tied the game, 7-7. Later in the quarter Leon Washington struck again when he broke through on a 60-yard touchdown run that put the Jets ahead 14-7 with a little less than two minutes left in the first half. The remaining time, however, was enough for the Chiefs offense to go 74 yards in 9 plays and tie the score, 14-14 at the half.
The third quarter began with a Kansas City possession that put them on top for the first time in the contest, 17-14. Later in the quarter the Jets responded with a scoring drive of their own, as RB Thomas Jones scored on a 1-yard run, 21-17. The defense quickly stopped the ensuing Kansas City drive and the offense began what seemed like a possession that would put the last nail in the Chiefs coffin. The Gang Green faced a 3rd down and 2 on Kansas City 8-yard line when Favre threw a pass right into the hands of a Chiefs defender who returned it all the way for a touchdown, 24-21. There was still plenty of time left and with 3:01 left on the game clock Favre and the Jets began what turned out to be the game winning drive. But first it was Leon Washington, of course, who made a 37-yard return into Kansas City territory and just one first down away from a possible game-tying field goal. Six plays later Favre connected with WR Laveranues Coles on a 15-yard touchdown pass, 28-24.
QB Brett Favre finished the game 28 of 40, 290 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT. RB Leon Washington gained 67 yards on 3 carries, 1 TD and added 3 receptions for 34 yards, 1 TD. RB Thomas Jones carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards, 1 TD. WR Jerricho Cotchery caught 9 passes for 102 yards. WR Laveranues Coles, who was playing after suffering a concussion last week, made 7 receptions for 64 yards, 1 TD. Rookie TE Dustin Keller saw plenty of playing time as both TE Bubba Franks and TE Chris Baker were banged up. Keller caught 4 passes for 38 yards.
Rookie CB Dwight Lowery lead the defense with 10 tackles (8 solo) and 1 pass defense. FS Kerry Rhodes had 9 tackles (8 solo), which included 3 for loss and 1 sack. DE Shaun Ellis recorded his 6th sack of the season.
Next Sunday the Jets will travel to Buffalo to take on the Buffalo Bills (5-2). The kickoff is at 1PM EST.
