Losing mentality doesn’t win games

Admin - October 2, 2005

Every NFL head coach is responsible for putting his team in the best position to win the game. It's his job to come up with the right game plan that would allow his players to succeed. It's totally different, however, if your name is Herman Edwards. The Jets head coach once again crawled into his shell and dug out his "not to lose" mentality that just doesn't win games in this league.

The Ravens sure expected the Jets to run the ball as much as possible in today's game. So, what did Herman Edwards decide to do? He decided to run, he decided to run right at one of the best defenses in the league that was putting eight, and at times nine, men in the box. He decided to run with the offensive line that had failed to open any holes in the first three games and the aging HOF running back that has averaged just 2.8 yards per carry this season. As a result, QB Brooks Bollinger threw the ball just once in the first quarter and the Gang Green gained only 13 yards.

The second quarter wasn't much better, as the Jets once again had only one first down. But hey, what do you expect when head coach tells his QB that every drive that results in a kick, doesn't matter if it's a punt or a field goal, is a good drive? You play to win the game? I don't think even Herman Edwards believes his own bullshit anymore. This man is clearly not qualified to hold a head coaching position in the NFL.

In the past few years many of us were blaming Paul Hackett for the ultraconservative offense and inability to utilize the strengths of our offensive players. This year's events, however, might expose the real reason why the Jets' offense has been so ineffective and conservative. The blame once again lies on the shoulders of Herman Edwards, the man who hardly ever accepts the blame and is more of a motivational speaker than an NFL head coach. He still hasn't learned how to manage the game clock and his atrocious, at times, decisions surely make us wonder why he got this job in the first place. In the third quarter of today's game Herm had to ask his offensive coordinator, Mike Heimerdinger, whether to accept or decline a penalty, but isn't that what head coach supposed to decide?

Edwards is clueless - plain and simple. I said this a few years ago and I'll keep saying this until Herman Edwards is out of New York. He's nothing more than a cheerleader who's not qualified to be a head coach in the NFL.

You play to win the game? Yeah right....

P.S. I apologize for not posting my usual game report but rather writing an opinionated article of a disgruntled Jets fan who happened to run this website.
