New York Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett resigned Wednesday, hopefully putting an end to the conservative playcalling that cost the Gang Green quite a few games during his tenure.
The Jets wasted little time selecting a replacement, hiring Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger later in the day. Hackett's departure was expected after the Jets' 20-17 overtime loss to Pittsburgh in the second round of the playoffs Saturday.
Heimerdinger, 52, served as the Titans offensive coordinator for five seasons and helped make it one of the top offenses in the NFL. In 2003, the Titans scored the most points (435) since 1961 and the second highest total in franchise history. Additionally, the Titans ranked in the top five in the NFL in time of possession in each of the last five seasons. He had recently been a candidate for the head coaching position with the 49ers. Heimerdinger joined the Titans after five seasons coaching the wide receivers for the two-time world champion Denver Broncos. Under his tutelage, the Denver tandem of Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith became one of the top wide receiving duos in the NFL.
