According to various news sources, the New York Jets offered DE Shaun Ellis, TE Anthony Becht and RB LaMont Jordan for the Washington Redskins CB Champ Bailey. While there's no question that Bailey is one of the top CBs in the league and the Jets definitely lack quality players in their secondary, the proposed trade seems to be questionable at best. With the move of John Abraham to LB, the Jets now have only one legitimate every down pass-rusher - Shaun Ellis.
What would the Jets do if they traded Ellis? Would they draft yet another DE in the first round? It doesn't seem like a good idea, considering that DE Bryan Thomas drafted by this front office in the first round two years ago has produced just 1.5 sacks in 31 games.
You just don't win games in this league without a dominating pass-rush. If an NFL quarterback has enough time to throw, he will be able to pick apart any secondary, with Champ Bailey or without.
