Jets Regular Season

Jets Rally Back, Beat Texans 19-14!

Admin - October 19, 2003

The New York Jets overcame a 14-point deficit and came back to win against the Houston Texans. It didn't look good at all in the first half, as the Jets came out looking totally flat and went three and out on the first three possessions. Right before halftime, trailing 0-14, the Gang Green finally delivered - an excellent 7-play drive that went 91 yards and was concluded by an 18-yard touchdown pass to WR Santana Moss. The Jets played without their other starting WR Wayne Chrebet and Moss saw an increased amount of passes thrown in his direction. He did not disappoint. 11 receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown! In the second half the Jets defense stepped up and completely shut the Texans down, making them punt on the first five possessions of the second half. Meanwhile, New York scored two field goals and cut Houston's lead to just one point.

With 2:48 to go in the fourth quarter the New York Jets obtained the ball on their own 14-yard line. On 2nd and 10 QB Vinny Testaverde connected with Moss on a 25-yard gain. Then, seeing that no one was open, Testaverde scrambled for a gain of 13 and into the Texans' territory. After the 2 minute warning it was Curtis Martin time. The aging running back rushed twice for a total of 34 yards, moving the Jets to the Texans' 14-yard line. Just two plays later RB LaMont Jordan scored on an 8-yard run, giving the Jets a 19-14 lead. The two point conversion failed but the Gang Green sure felt pretty comfortable being up by 5 points with only 1:26 to go in the game.

Then, the Jets almost blew it... Only a tackle made by LB Quincy Stewart saved the Jets from a possible disaster when the Texans ran the kickoff right back to New York's 27-yard line. The Texans had an opportunity to win but the Jets' defense held up, stopping Houston on the 9-yard line.

For the second game in a row the Jets gained over 100 yards on the ground. RB Curtis Martin ran for 88 yards on 17 carries, and LaMont Jordan added 40 more yards on 7 carries. WR Curtis Conway looked absolutely terrible, as he caught just one pass for 3 yards. QB Vinny Testaverde finished the game 15 for 29, 182 yards, 1 TD. The touchdown was Testaverde's 250th of his long NFL career.

On the defensive side DE Shaun Ellis registered yet another sack - his 8th of the season. Rookie LB Victor Hobson registered his first NFL sack. DE John Abraham was invisible, as he returned to the lineup after his one game suspension. Abraham had just two tackles and was unable to apply any pressure on QB David Carr.

Next week the Jets will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles and we'll probably see QB Chad Pennington back in action. If the Jets beat the Eagles, they will be pretty much back in the playoff race...

GO JETS!!!
