The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and appointed head coach Adam Gase as interim general manager. This is quite shocking and unexpected, even by the Jets standards. Maccagnan still had two years left on his contract and if the Jets ownership really wanted to change things around, they should have fired him together with Bowles right after the season. Maccagnan, however, was retained and allowed to run the draft and go after free agents. So, this move has all the signs of internal power struggle within the Jets organization.
The Jets will begin looking for Maccagnan's replacement. But for now head coach Adam Gase, who has a below .500 head coaching record and no playoff wins, has absolute control over the team's football operations. The Jets also fired VP of Player Personnel Brian Heimerdinger.
