WR Vyncint Smith, who started four games for the Gang Green last season, will undergo surgery on a core muscle injury that will sideline him for 5-8 weeks. Smith was going to see more playing time this season and many expected him to have a breakout year. Last season he played in 13 games, catching 17 passes for 225 yards. He also ran for 52 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, Smith returned 10 kickoffs for 299 yards and was the Jets primary kick returner.
The Jets are suddenly pretty thin at wide receiver, as rookie WR Denzel Mims is also sidelined with a hamstring injury.
On Sunday the Jets signed WR Chris Hogan, 32, who started in 35 NFL games over the course of 8 seasons. His best season was in 2016 when he caught 38 passes for 680 yards, 4 TDs as a 14-game starter for New England.
CB Pierre Desir (hamstring), CB Brian Poole (dehydration), DL Jabari Zuniga (quad), OL Cameron Clark (shoulder), OL Bronson Kaufusi (hamstring) and TE Ross Travis (groin) all missed today's practice. ILB Avery Williamson is still recovering from a torn ACL.
