LB James Burgess, a restricted free agent who started 10 games for the Jets last season, has been re-signed by the team. Burgess, 26, has signed a 1-year deal to add depth to the Gang Green's linebacking corps. Last year Burgess, who was claimed off waivers five days after being released by the Dolphins, recorded 80 tackles (51 solo), 0.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception and 5 pass defenses. He participated in 60% of all defensive snaps.
Burgess was signed in 2016 by Miami as an undrafted free agent. Then, he went through a few teams before ending up on the Browns' roster. He started in 11 games for Cleveland over two seasons before being placed on IR in October of 2018 and released a few days later.
Burgess is expected to be a back up in the middle where starters C.J. Mosley and Avery Williamson are expected to return after missing most of last season due to injuries.
