Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, who was the Gang Green's #3 overall selection last year, was arrested at LaGuardia Airport for allegedly possessing a handgun. Williams had an Alabama weapon permit, which is not accepted in New York City. In case you're not familiar with NYC firearm laws, NYC only accepts NYC handgun permits. New York State handgun permits are not acceptable either, unless they are validated by the NYPD commissioner. In New York, even the possession of an unloaded operable handgun is a felony. If the gun was loaded, it's a minimum sentence of 3.5 years.
According to Port Authority officials, Williams was about to catch a plane out of town when he was arrested at 9:15 PM for criminal possession of a weapon. His case will be handled by the Queens District Attorney’s office, police said.
Williams, 22, had a subpar rookie season. He played in 13 games (started in 9) and registered only 28 tackles (15 solo) and 2.5 sacks.
UPDATE (4:19pm): According to a Port Authority Police spokesperson, Williams did not have any ammunition and the gun was in his checked bag. He was arrested because he did not have a New York City gun permit, which is still a felony but not nearly as bad as carrying a loaded handgun aboard.
