Can the Jets be a surprise package in 2019?

Admin - May 28, 2019

It's been eight years since the Jets reached the playoffs and as the new season approaches there’s plenty of talk as to whether the Gang Green can make it this time around.

The side are once again outsiders in the football betting stakes, at a huge 66/1 to win the Super Bowl and 33/1 for the conference, but despite that a number of pundits are speculating the Jets could be the surprise package.

That comes thanks to the hire of Adam Gase, with many believing his offensive mind can really build around the talent they have.

He could really get the most out of Sam Darnold, who began to show signs of real quality towards the end of last season. That could really benefit their play and the performances of wideout Robby Anderson and running back Le'Veon Bell, both of whom are real standout performers, particularly the latter who has just joined the franchise.

It's safe to say the Jets have their best squad in years with a completely revamped roster. The additions of Bell alongside Kelechi Osemele and Jamison Crowder have really strengthened the squad to the point where NFL.com's Greg Rosenthal has marked them as ones to watch for the 2019 season.

He said, "From perhaps the best three-down back in football to deep speed and a surplus of options between the hashmarks, new coach Adam Gase has a little bit of everything.”

That could make a 6/1 punt on them with Ladbrokes to finish AFC East Division as leaders a worthwhile punt.

One thing could still stand between them and the playoffs however, which is perhaps why their odds aren't a little shorter. There are still certain holes in the team, which many are keen to point out.

While some believe business has been good on the draft, critics aren't sure they have invested in the right areas, with Rosenthal suggesting their cornerbacks are among the worst in the NFL, and others preferring the money to go on an outside line than overpaying for Mosley.

It puts a lot of pressure on a number of big name players who still have a few question marks looming over their heads. Step up to the plate though and it could be a season to remember.

According to the bookmakers it's perhaps the best chance in a number of years the Jets have had to challenge for the division title. Naturally, we'll certainly have a punt on them.
